Chapter 6

The man threw the purse onto our windshield.
Bear swerved but kept control.
A document flew from the open bag and stuck beneath a wiper.
Emily stared at it.
“That’s the insurance policy.”
Daniel had secretly purchased a two-million-dollar policy on her life.
The pursuing car rammed us.
Luis leaned from the rear window and photographed the license plate.
“Registered to Cole’s brother,” he said.
Bear slammed the brakes.
The other vehicle shot ahead.
We turned onto a farm road and lost it behind a line of trees.
Emily’s tracking signal stopped moving.
An abandoned motel stood ahead.
Daniel’s SUV was parked behind it.
We approached quietly.
A child screamed inside room twelve.
Emily ran before anyone could stop her.
“Sophie!”
The door opened.
Daniel stepped out holding our eight-year-old girl against him.
One arm pressed across her chest.
His other hand held a set of car keys.
“Back away.”
Sophie’s face was wet with tears.
“Mommy!”
Emily started forward.
Daniel tightened his arm.
Bear moved between them.
“You don’t want to hurt that child.”
“You don’t know what I want.”
“I know you need leverage. She’s useless if you frighten everyone into attacking.”
Daniel studied him.
Bear’s calm voice was buying time.
Luis moved around the building.
I saw him disappear behind Daniel’s SUV.
Daniel looked directly at me.
“You were supposed to take the blame and disappear.”
“For what?”
“For everything Emily was about to discover.”
Emily stared at him.
“What did you do?”
Daniel smiled.
“Ask your mother where your father’s money went.”
My late husband had left Emily a trust worth millions.
I had believed it was untouched.
Daniel tossed Sophie into the motel room and locked the door.
Then an engine roared behind us.

His SUV sped away without him.
Luis was driving it—with Sophie safely in the back seat.
