Chapter 22

The line disconnected.

Federal agents in Montana raced to Michael’s address.

They found his truck damaged beside the road.

Michael was gone.

Security footage showed two men forcing him into a van.

Daniel had arranged the kidnapping before entering the courthouse.

From jail, he refused to reveal the destination.

Sophie sat beside Bear.

“Will my real dad die because of me?”

Bear knelt before her.

“None of this is because of you.”

Jacob studied Daniel’s earlier messages.

One mentioned a place called North Star.

Michael worked near an abandoned mine with that name.

Local deputies searched it but found nothing.

Bear noticed the mine plans were incomplete.

A maintenance tunnel continued beyond the marked wall.

We flew to Montana with federal agents.

Deep inside the tunnel, we heard metal striking stone.

Michael had loosened his restraints and was fighting one captor.

Bear tackled the second.

Michael looked older than the photographs, but Emily recognized him immediately.

For several seconds, they only stared at each other.

Then Sophie stepped forward.

Michael fell to his knees.

“I missed everything.”

Emily touched his face.

“So did I.”

He showed investigators documents he had hidden inside the mine years earlier.

They proved Richard framed him.

They also exposed Daniel’s largest secret.

Daniel had been moving stolen trust money through a children’s charity.

Bear’s motorcycle organization had raised funds for that same charity.

Daniel used their names to disguise millions in transfers.

If authorities followed the paperwork carelessly, Bear and his friends would appear responsible.

News reports were already calling them a criminal gang.

When we returned to Tennessee, federal agents surrounded Bear’s clubhouse.
