Peter’s widow was named Laura.
At the hospital, she told investigators that Peter had discovered Richard’s theft from Emily’s trust.
He planned to report it.
Richard staged his own death and Peter’s murder in one act.
Laura had received anonymous payments afterward.
She believed Peter sent them.
Daniel used those payments to keep her hoping and silent.
Laura gave us Peter’s final voicemail.
“If anything happens to me, the evidence is beneath Margaret’s house.”
My house had been empty since Daniel accused me of theft.
Federal agents searched it.
Beneath the basement floor, they found a metal case.
Inside were original trust records and a handwritten confession from Peter.
There was also a cassette tape recorded by my father before his death.
His voice shook as he admitted selling Bear’s adoption rights to settle a gambling debt.
Richard found the tape thirty years later.
My father begged him to tell me.
Richard refused because the secret gave him power over the family fortune.
Bear listened without moving.
When the recording ended, he walked upstairs.
I found him sitting on the porch.
“I hated you for most of my life,” he said.
“You had every reason to.”
“No. I had a story someone gave me. That isn’t the same as truth.”
I sat beside him.
He took my hand.
It was the first time he reached for me.
Then the house alarm sounded.
A federal agent rushed outside.
Richard had entered the property through an old storm tunnel.
He stole Peter’s confession and set the basement on fire.
Worse, Emily had gone downstairs moments earlier.
