Bear refused the inheritance immediately.
“I don’t want his money.”
The attorney explained that refusing it would transfer the assets to a corporation Daniel once controlled.
We could not risk that.
Bear accepted temporarily and ordered a full audit.
Most of the fortune came from stolen trust funds and blackmail.
He returned money to victims.
He created a foundation in Peter Shaw’s name.
The remaining assets funded shelters, legal aid, and family-reunification services.
He kept only Richard’s lakeside property.
Then he demolished the house.
In its place, he built a retreat for children recovering from family trauma.
Ruth attended the opening beside me.
Caroline watched through a secure video connection from prison.
She had begun cooperating with investigators and speaking honestly with Ruth.
Healing did not erase consequences.
It simply stopped the damage from spreading.
Emily and Michael married beneath strings of lights behind the diner.
Sophie carried flowers.
Jacob served as Michael’s best man.
Jo performed the ceremony.
Bear walked Emily to the aisle, then returned for me.
“I missed a lot of years,” he said.
“We have today.”
During the reception, a nervous teenage girl approached Bear.
She had recently escaped a dangerous home and recognized him from the news.
“People said you help families.”
Bear glanced at me.
“We try.”
The girl held the hand of a little boy.
“He’s my brother. I need somewhere safe.”
Bear opened the diner door.
Everyone inside made room.
