Chapter 5

The call ended before I could answer.

Emily arrived with the diner owner in his truck.

She jumped out and ran to me.

“Mom!”

I held her as tightly as my cuffed wrists allowed.

Bear broke the chain with a small tool from his motorcycle bag, but left the cuffs around my wrists as evidence.

“We need the state police,” Jo said.

Cole laughed bitterly.

“Daniel has friends there too.”

“Then we go federal,” Bear replied.

I stared at him.

“Why are you doing this?”

His eyes softened.

“Because someone once asked strangers to help my mother. Nobody did.”

Emily wiped her face.

“Sophie has a smartwatch. Daniel doesn’t know my father gave it to her.”

She opened a tracking application on the diner owner’s phone.

A location appeared outside Franklin.

An old storage facility.

Bear divided the bikers into two groups.

Jo stayed with Cole while Bear, Luis, Emily, and I drove toward the location.

Nobody spoke during the ride.

The signal moved suddenly.

“He’s transporting her,” Emily said.

The marker headed toward Interstate 65.

Bear accelerated.

Ten minutes later, we saw Daniel’s SUV.

Emily leaned forward.

“That’s him.”

A second vehicle appeared behind us.

Then a third.

Cole had called someone before losing his radio.

The vehicles boxed us in.

Bear gripped the steering wheel.

“Hold on.”

He took an exit at the last second.

One pursuing car missed it.

The other followed.

Daniel continued south with Sophie.

We raced through narrow back roads until the pursuing vehicle pulled beside us.

The passenger lowered his window.

He wasn’t a police officer.

May you like

He was Daniel’s business partner.

And he was holding Emily’s missing purse.
