Chapter 4

I dropped my phone like it was on fire.

Lisa picked it up.

Her face hardened.

“Is this Ryan?”

“It has to be,” I whispered.

I was already grabbing my keys.

“I need to go get Noah. Now.”

“Wait,” Lisa said, grabbing my arm.

“Calling the police first. If he’s at the school, we don’t want you walking into a trap. Let the officers handle it. And I’m coming with you.”

We called the police again.

Then we raced to Noah’s elementary school.

My hands were shaking so bad I could barely hold the steering wheel.

All I could think about was that photo.

Ryan had been at the school.

He’d been within feet of my son.

And I hadn’t been there to protect him.

We skidded into the parking lot.

Two police cars were already there.

I ran inside.

The principal was waiting for me in the office.

Noah was sitting on a chair, coloring, completely unaware of the panic.

I ran to him and crushed him in a hug.

“Mommy! You’re squishing me!” he laughed.

I pulled back, checking him over from head to toe.

“Are you okay, baby? Did Daddy talk to you? Did anyone try to take you?”

Noah shook his head.

“Daddy wasn’t here. Just Grandma. She waved at me through the fence at recess. She said she’d come back soon to take me home for ice cream.”

My heart stopped.

Diane.

It had been Diane taking the photos.

And she’d been close enough to touch him.

The principal looked apologetic.

“I’m so sorry, Sarah. We had no idea there was a restraining order. We just updated the system. From now on, neither your husband nor his mother is allowed on school property. If they show up again, we’re calling the police immediately. And Noah will have a teacher with him at all times during recess and dismissal.”

The officers took my statement again.

They increased the protective order to include the school, my office, and Mia’s house.

But I knew it wasn’t enough.

Ryan and Diane had already proven they didn’t care about the law.

They were willing to do anything to get what they wanted.

On the way home, Noah fell asleep in the car.

Lisa looked over at me.

“This changes things,” she said quietly.

“They’re escalating. Ryan knows he’s losing. He’s desperate. And desperate people do stupid, dangerous things. We need to move up the emergency custody hearing. Tomorrow. I’ll call the judge tonight. We can’t wait three days. Not anymore.”

I nodded.

I couldn’t speak.

I was too scared.

That night, Mia stayed over again.

We sat at the kitchen table, going through every single document we could find in Ryan’s home office.

We needed ammunition.

Anything we could use against him in court.

And then Mia found it.

Hidden in the back of a desk drawer, under a stack of old tax returns.

A burner phone.

It was still charged.

We opened it.

And found hundreds of text messages.

Between Ryan and Diane.

And between Ryan and another woman.

Her name was Jenna.

And she was pregnant.

I stared at the screen.

I read the messages over and over again, hoping I was misunderstanding them.

I wasn’t.

Ryan had been cheating on me for over a year.

Jenna was seven months pregnant.

With a boy.

And the messages told the whole story.

The whole sick, twisted plan.

Ryan owed over two hundred thousand dollars in gambling debts.

To very dangerous people.

He’d spent every penny we had.

Then he’d forged my name on the loans and credit cards.

But it still wasn’t enough.

So he’d come up with a plan.

With Diane’s help.

They would frame me as an abusive, unfit mother.

They would get full custody of Noah.

Then they would gain access to the trust fund my father had left for Noah when he died.

Half a million dollars.

Enough to pay off all Ryan’s debts.

Enough for him to start a new life with Jenna and their new baby.

And Diane?

Ryan had promised her he’d buy her a luxury condo in Florida.

All she had to do was help him destroy me.

And they’d been planning it for eight months.

Eight months.

Every dinner.

Every bedtime story.

Every “I love you” had been a lie.

While he’d been lying next to me in bed, he’d been texting his mistress and his mother, planning how to ruin my life and steal my son.

I felt sick.

I ran to the bathroom and threw up.

Mia held my hair back.

“Sarah,” she said gently.

“I know this is the worst thing you’ve ever heard. But look at it this way. This is the proof we need. This proves his motive. This proves every single thing we’ve been saying. He’s not just a bad husband. He’s a criminal. And a monster. And when the judge sees these messages? He’s never going to see Noah again. Not without a supervisor. Not for a very long time.”

I wiped my mouth and looked at myself in the mirror.

My eyes were red.

My face was pale.

But there was something else there now.

A cold, burning hatred.

And a determination so strong nothing could break it.

“You’re right,” I said.

I washed my face and walked back to the kitchen.

I picked up the burner phone.

“Tomorrow, we show this to the judge. And we end this. Once and for all.”

May you like

But Ryan wasn’t going to wait for tomorrow.

At three o’clock that morning, the smoke alarm went off.
