Chapter 1

I came home from work early and found my mother-in-law hitting my eight-year-old son—then I noticed my husband’s phone recording everything from the kitchen counter.
I had left work early because my son Noah sounded strange on the phone.
“Mom, can you come home?”
Before I could ask why, the call suddenly ended.
My mother-in-law, Diane, was supposed to be watching him until six.
I pulled into our driveway outside Dallas and immediately heard shouting.
Then I heard Noah scream.
I dropped my bag and ran inside.
Diane had Noah cornered beside the dining table.
She slapped his arm and shouted, “Stop lying!”
“Get away from my son!”
Diane spun around.
Noah ran straight into my arms.
He was shaking.
“Mom, I didn’t do anything.”
Diane pointed at him.
“He stole money from my purse.”
Noah started crying.
“I didn’t!”
I looked at Diane.
“You hit an eight-year-old over missing money?”
“He needs discipline because you refuse to give him any.”
I pulled out my phone.
“Get out of my house.”
Instead of leaving, Diane grabbed Noah again.
I shoved her hand away.
She slapped me across the face.
“You don’t speak to me like that.”
Noah suddenly screamed, “Grandma put the money in my backpack!”
Diane froze.
I opened Noah’s school bag.
An envelope filled with cash was sitting inside.
“I never saw that before,” Noah whispered.
Diane rushed toward me and tried to grab it.
That was when I noticed another phone propped against a bowl on the kitchen counter.
Its camera was pointed directly at us.
It belonged to my husband, Ryan.
Diane’s face went pale when I picked it up.
The recording had been running for almost forty minutes.
But when I replayed the beginning, I didn’t just see Diane placing the money inside Noah’s backpack.
I heard Ryan’s voice behind the camera.
“Make sure he cries. We need people to believe Sarah is an unfit mother.”

Then the front door opened.
Ryan walked inside, saw his phone in my hand, and stopped dead.
