Chapter 6

The next two weeks were a blur of depositions, strategy meetings, and late nights going through thousands of pages of Jonathan’s records.
Nathaniel’s team didn’t miss a thing.
They found his ex-wife, Sarah, who’d left him after five years of marriage with a restraining order and a broken rib.
They found three former employees who’d been fired after reporting Jonathan for embezzling from his own company.
They found Lila—his mistress, the one who’d worn my mom’s necklace in court—who’d been arrested twice for shoplifting and once for DUI.
They found text messages between Jonathan and his lawyer, talking about how to "break Grace mentally" so she’d give up custody.
They found bank records showing he’d been siphoning money from his startup for years, lying to investors about how much the company was worth.
But Jonathan wasn’t sitting still.
He had a PR team, and they were good.
Every day, a new lie popped up on the news.

*Exclusive: Former Nanny Says Grace Was "Neglectful" Of Her Newborn Baby*
*Jonathan Blackwell Breaks His Silence: "I Just Want My Daughter Back"*
He did interviews on morning talk shows, sitting there in his expensive suit, fake tears in his eyes, talking about how "heartbroken" he was that I was "keeping his daughter from him."
He told people I was a drug addict, that I was mentally unstable, that Nathaniel was "controlling" me and using Clara to get back at him for some old business deal.
People believed him.
The comments on social media were brutal.
*She’s just using the old man for his money.*
*No wonder her kid is gonna be messed up, look at her mom.*
*Jonathan seems like such a good dad. Give him his baby back!*
I stopped reading the comments after the first week.
They made me sick.
But what hurt worse was the way people looked at me when I went out.
I took Clara to the grocery store once, and a woman came up to me, yelling that I was a "baby thief" and that I should be ashamed of myself.
Nathaniel made me stop going out alone after that.
He assigned two bodyguards to me 24/7, wherever I went.
One night, I was feeding Clara in the nursery when Nathaniel knocked on the door.
He was holding a tablet, his face grim.
"What is it?" I asked, my stomach dropping.
I knew that look.
It meant bad news.
"Lila posted a video," he said, sitting down beside me.
"Ten minutes ago. It’s already got two million views."
He turned the tablet toward me.
Lila was on the screen, sitting in her fancy apartment, wearing my mom’s emerald necklace, crying crocodile tears.
"I’m so sorry to do this," she said, dabbing her eyes with a tissue.
"But I can’t stay silent anymore. Grace is my friend. Or she was, before she met Nathaniel Cross. And I know everyone is saying she’s a gold digger, but that’s not true. She’s sick. She’s been struggling with prescription drug addiction for years. She was taking Xanax and Percocet the whole time she was pregnant with Clara. I tried to get her to stop, I tried to help her, but she threatened me. Said if I told anyone, she’d tell Jonathan I was stealing from him. I’m so scared for that baby. If she’s using now, who knows what she’s doing to that little girl? Someone has to help her. Before it’s too late."
The video cut off.
I stared at the screen, my hands shaking so bad I almost dropped Clara.
"That’s a lie," I whispered.
"I’ve never taken drugs in my life. Not even Tylenol when I was pregnant. The doctor can confirm that. All my drug tests at the hospital were negative. She’s lying. She’s making it all up."
"I know," Nathaniel said, his voice tight with rage.
"She’s doing this because Jonathan is paying her. We found a transfer of fifty thousand dollars from his account to hers yesterday. This is all a setup to make you look unfit. CPS is gonna get a call. They’re gonna have to investigate. They might even take Clara temporarily while they look into it."
I stood up, clutching Clara to my chest.
"No. They can’t take her. She’s mine. She needs me. If they take her, she’ll be scared. She won’t understand. I won’t let them."
"Hey, hey, breathe," Nathaniel said, standing up, putting his hands on my shoulders.
"They’re not taking her. We have the hospital records. We have all your clean drug tests. We have Dr. Hale, who’s been your doctor since the day you walked into the penthouse, ready to testify you’ve never touched a drug in your life. We have proof Jonathan paid Lila to make that video. This is gonna backfire on them. Bad."
He paused, his jaw tightening.
"But we have to hit first. Hard. Before this gets any worse."
He pulled out his phone, hitting a number.
"Release it," he said, when the person on the other end answered.
"All of it. Now."
He hung up, looking at me.
"What did you do?" I asked.
"Jonathan’s whole life is a lie," he said.
"His company is a scam. He’s been stealing from investors for years. We sent all the bank records, the text messages, the sworn statements from his employees to every news outlet in the country. And we sent Lila’s rap sheet, the proof Jonathan paid her, and a video of her bragging to a friend about how she was gonna ‘take Grace down and get half of Jonathan’s money’ to the same outlets. By morning, the whole world is gonna know what kind of people they really are."
He was right.
By 7 a.m. the next day, the headlines had flipped.

Sarah, Jonathan’s ex-wife, did an interview with a major news network, pulling up her shirt to show the scar on her side from where Jonathan had hit her with a wine bottle.
She talked about how he’d controlled every part of her life—her money, her friends, what she wore, who she talked to.
She said she’d left him after he’d thrown her down the stairs when she was pregnant with their son, causing her to miscarry.
She warned everyone: If Jonathan gets custody of that little girl, he will break her. Just like he broke me.
The court of public opinion turned overnight.
The people who’d called me a gold digger were now calling Jonathan a monster.
The comments on Lila’s video were flooded with people calling her a liar, a thief, a homewrecker.
Her Instagram was deleted by noon.
Jonathan’s company folded by 3 p.m., all his investors pulling their money.
That night, we were sitting in the living room, watching the news, when Jonathan called.
Nathaniel answered, putting it on speaker.
"You think you won?" Jonathan screamed, his voice high and crazy.
"You think ruining my company is gonna make me back off? I will take that baby from you, Grace. I will spend every last dime I have to make sure you never see her again. You think you’re safe with Cross? He’s just using you. He doesn’t love you. No one does. You’re a worthless foster kid who never deserved anything good in your life. I’m gonna take Clara, and I’m gonna raise her to hate you. And every night, when she cries for her mom, I’m gonna laugh. Because you deserve it. You deserve every bad thing that’s ever happened to you, and every bad thing that’s gonna happen—"
Nathaniel hung up.
He looked at me, his face soft.
"You okay?" he asked.
I nodded, but I wasn’t.
Jonathan’s words echoed in my head.
*You’re a worthless foster kid who never deserved anything good in your life.*
It was the same thing he’d said to me a hundred times when we were married.
The same thing I’d whispered to myself a thousand times when I was alone in the dark.
But then I looked at Clara, asleep in her bouncer, her little face peaceful.
I looked at Nathaniel, who’d given up everything to protect me.
I thought of Maggie, of my mom, of all the people who loved me.
He was wrong.
I wasn’t worthless.
I was loved.
I was a mom.
I was a daughter.
And I wasn’t going to let him scare me anymore.
The first custody hearing was in three days.

It was time to end this.
Once and for all.
