Chapter 1

At 8 months pregnant, I was stripped of everything in divorce court. "Take this $100 bill for a cab to a homeless shelter," my ex sneered. His mistress smirked, wearing my dead mother’s stolen necklace. He kicked me out into the freezing rain, laughing as his Mercedes pulled up. Suddenly, three armored SUVs swerved onto the plaza, boxing his car in. A famous billionaire CEO stepped out, shielded me from the storm, and whispered a terrifying promise that made my ex-husband drop to his knees...

"Based upon the valid prenuptial agreement," the judge announced, "all marital assets remain the exclusive property of Jonathan Blackwell. Mrs. Blackwell must vacate the premises immediately."

His gavel struck.

The courtroom fell silent.

I wrapped my trembling arms around my eight-month pregnant belly.

Twenty-four years old.

No parents.

No savings.

No home.

Jonathan walked over to my table, but he didn't come to offer pity.

His lawyer slapped a crisp one-hundred-dollar bill and a Non-Disclosure Agreement onto the wood in front of me.

"Sign it," Jonathan whispered, leaning close enough for me to smell his expensive cologne. "Take the hundred bucks to call a cab to the homeless shelter. If you don't, I call the police right now and report that the maternity dress you are wearing was purchased on my credit card. You'll give birth in a county jail."

I looked behind him.

His twenty-three-year-old mistress was smiling.

And resting against her collarbone was the delicate emerald teardrop necklace Jonathan had stolen from my jewelry box—the only thing I had left of my dead mother.

I swallowed my humiliation, signed the paper, and took the bill.

"Let's see how you and that baby survive without my money," he sneered, turning his back on me.

Ten minutes later, I was pushed out the heavy courthouse doors into a freezing, torrential downpour.

Soaked to the bone, I shivered on the concrete steps, clutching my stomach as the cold seeped into my soul.

A sleek black Mercedes pulled up to the curb.

The tinted window rolled down, revealing Jonathan’s smirking face.

He opened his mouth to deliver one final, devastating insult.

Then—

SCREECH!

The piercing sound of heavy tires tearing across wet asphalt drowned out the thunder.

Three massive, matte-black armored SUVs swerved violently onto the courthouse plaza.

They jumped the curb, boxing in Jonathan’s Mercedes with terrifying military precision.

Tactical security guards poured out, yanking Jonathan's driver out of the car and pinning him to the wet pavement.

The rear door of the central vehicle swung open.

A man stepped out into the freezing rain.

Perfectly tailored charcoal suit.

Silver-tipped cane.

It was Nathaniel Cross, the elusive billionaire CEO of Cross Meridian.

He didn't even look at Jonathan's trapped, panicked face.

His icy blue eyes were locked entirely on me, carrying a lifetime of unspoken weight.

He climbed the concrete steps, a guard holding a massive black umbrella over him, and gently wrapped his heavy wool overcoat around my shivering, pregnant frame. The scent of sandalwood, wealth, and absolute power enveloped me.

Only then did he turn his head toward the Mercedes.

"If you ever look in her direction again," his voice cut through the storm like a seismic rumble, "I will not bother ruining you in a courtroom."

Jonathan’s face went completely white.

He scrambled backward into his leather seat, stammering. "W-what is this? Who are you? Grace's a nobody! She grew up in foster care! She doesn't have anyone!"

The billionaire didn't flinch.

"I will simply erase you from the earth."

Jonathan stared at the tactical team, trembling in pure shock.

His mistress frantically clutched my mother's stolen necklace, the blood draining from her face.

And for the first time since our marriage began...

He realized he had just thrown into the streets the one woman whose life was about to become everything he could never touch.
