Chapter 1

My husband was beating me with his belt when my father opened the door. He lifted me from the floor, then turned and punched the man I had protected for years.

The belt struck my shoulder before I could crawl away.

“Michael, please stop,” I cried.

He raised it again.

“You embarrassed me in front of my family.”

I covered my face and curled against the living-room couch.

Our seven-year-old son was hiding upstairs.

I had told him to lock his bedroom door and call Grandpa.

Michael grabbed my arm and pulled me upright.

“You turned my own son against me.”

“He’s afraid of you,” I whispered.

His expression changed.

The belt came down again.

Then the front door slammed open.

My father, Robert, stood there breathing hard.

His eyes dropped to the bruises on my arms.

“Dad,” I sobbed.

He rushed across the room and caught me before I fell.

Michael quickly dropped the belt.

“She attacked me first,” he said.

Dad gently helped me sit against the couch.

Then he picked up the belt from the floor.

“You used this on my daughter?”

Michael stepped closer.

“This is between me and my wife.”

Dad turned and punched him squarely in the face.

Michael crashed against the dining table.

“You don’t have a wife anymore,” Dad said.

Michael touched his bleeding lip and laughed.

“You think she’ll leave me?”

Dad looked at me.

I lowered my eyes because Michael was right.

I had tried leaving twice before.

Both times, he threatened to take my son away.

Then small footsteps came from the staircase.

My son stood there holding my phone.

“I recorded everything, Mom.”

Michael’s face went still.

Dad reached for the phone, but my son pulled it against his chest.

“I already sent the video,” he said.

Suddenly, police sirens stopped outside our house.

Michael ran toward the back door.

But when it opened, a woman was already standing there—and she was holding the divorce papers I had secretly signed that morning.
