Chapter 4

The first offer came three days later.

It wasn't from Margaret or Caleb—they were both out on bail, forbidden from contacting me. It came from Ryan's older brother, Daniel.

Daniel was the golden boy of the family. Handsome, charming, the one who was supposed to inherit everything. He had always been polite to me, in that distant, superior way that old money has of making you feel like you're not quite good enough.

He showed up at the hospital alone, carrying a leather briefcase and a practiced smile.

"Claire," he said, greeting me with a small nod. "Ryan. I hear things have been... difficult."

Ryan tensed beside me. "What do you want, Daniel?"

"To fix this." Daniel sat down in the chair Sarah had occupied, placing his briefcase on his lap. "Before it destroys the family."

"The family destroyed itself when Mother tried to steal Claire's baby," Ryan said coldly.

Daniel waved a hand dismissively. "Mother made a mistake. She was... overzealous. She wanted what was best for the Whitmore name."

"Best for the name?" I spoke up, my voice steady. "Or best for her bank account?"

Daniel's smile didn't waver, but his eyes cooled. "I see Sarah Chen has been filling your head with nonsense. Look, Claire—we can make this go away. All of it. The charges against Mother and Caleb will be dropped. You'll receive a generous settlement—ten million dollars, tax-free. Enough to set you and Emma up for life. You can move wherever you want. Live however you want."

He opened his briefcase and pulled out a stack of papers, sliding them across the bed toward me.

"All you have to do is sign the release, agree not to press charges, and sign a standard non-disclosure agreement. Simple."

I looked at the papers without touching them. Ten million dollars. It was more money than I had ever dreamed of. Enough to make sure Emma never wanted for anything. Enough to buy a house, pay for college, live comfortably forever.

But it was also hush money.

"And what about the company?" I asked. "The offshore accounts. The bribes. The money laundering through the foundation."

Daniel's smile finally faded. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Yes, you do." Ryan leaned forward. "I've seen the books too, Daniel. Or at least, parts of them. I just... I didn't want to believe it."

His brother sighed, leaning back. "You always were too soft, Ryan. This is how the world works. People like us—we do what we have to do to maintain our position. If we didn't, someone worse would come along and take everything."

"That's not an excuse," I said.

"Maybe not. But it's reality." Daniel tapped the papers. "Ten million, Claire. That's real. All this talk about justice? It's a fantasy. You think you can take down the Whitmore family? We have lawyers on retainer who make Sarah Chen look like a public defender. We have connections in every branch of government. If you push this, you will lose. And when you do, you won't get a dime. You might not even get to keep Emma."

The threat hung in the air.

Ryan stood up, his face dark. "Get out."

"Ryan, think about this—"

"I said get out!"

Daniel stood, slowly gathering his papers. "You have seventy-two hours to decide, Claire. After that, the offer is off the table. And we do things the hard way."

He left. The door clicked shut behind him.

Ryan ran a hand through his hair, looking exhausted. "He's right, you know. Not about the money—about the connections. My family... they're powerful. Scary powerful."

"I know," I said. "But I also know something they don't."

"What's that?"

I reached into the drawer beside my bed and pulled out an external hard drive.

"I have the books," I said. "All of them. Every transaction, every account, every payment. I copied everything six months ago, when I first started suspecting something was wrong. Daniel thinks he can scare me off? He has no idea what I'm holding."

Ryan stared at the hard drive as if it were a bomb.

"That's... that's everything?"

"Everything." I held it in my hand. "This isn't just about custody anymore, Ryan. This is about taking down a criminal empire. And your brother just made the first mistake."

"What mistake?"

"He threatened me." I smiled, cold and sharp. "Now I'm not just fighting for Emma. I'm fighting to make sure people like Daniel and Margaret never hurt anyone again."

Ryan sat back down, looking at me as if seeing me for the first time.

"Who are you?" he whispered.

I thought about the quiet wife they had all mocked. The woman who smiled through their insults, who played the part of the perfect socialite, who never said a word when they treated her like an outsider.

That woman was gone.

"I'm the woman who's going to burn your family's empire to the ground," I said. "And build something better in its place."
