Chapter 2

Margaret's smile faltered when she saw Ryan's face.
She had expected him to be angry at me. To call me dramatic. To side with her, as he always had.
But Ryan wasn't looking at me with suspicion anymore. He was looking at his mother with something she had never seen before.
Rage.
"Mother," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "What did you do to her?"
Margaret laughed, but it sounded forced. "Ryan, don't be ridiculous. She did this to herself. You know how she gets—emotional, unstable. After the birth, she—"
"Don't." Ryan took a step toward her, and she actually flinched. "I saw the bruises, Mother. They're fresh. And they're not from childbirth."
Caleb stepped forward, smooth as ever. "Ryan, let's be reasonable. Your wife has been under enormous stress. Postpartum psychosis is a very real—"
"Get out."
Caleb blinked. "Excuse me?"
"I said get out." Ryan's eyes never left his mother. "Both of you. Now."
Margaret's mask finally cracked. "You're choosing her over your own family? Over everything we've built?"
"I'm choosing the truth," Ryan said quietly.
I watched from the bed, my heart hammering. This was the moment I had dared to hope for but never truly believed would come. Ryan had always been his mother's son—obedient, loyal, terrified of disappointing her.
But something in him had snapped.
Margaret's face twisted into something ugly. "You'll regret this, Ryan. Both of you will. When the board hears that the Whitmore heir is married to a mentally unstable woman who abuses her own body for sympathy—"
"Try it."
The voice came from the doorway.
We all turned. Standing there was a woman I had never seen before—mid-forties, sharp suit, no-nonsense expression. She held up a small device in her hand.
"I'm Detective Alvarez," she said, flashing a badge. "And I just heard enough to arrest both of you for coercion, assault, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping."
Margaret went pale. Caleb's hand tightened on his leather folder.
"You can't be serious," Caleb said, recovering quickly. "This is a private family matter. My client and I were simply discussing—"
"Discussing forcing a new mother to sign away her rights?" Detective Alvarez stepped into the room. "I don't think so. And for the record? I have a witness who saw two nurses leaving this room in a hurry an hour ago. They're already in custody and talking."
I felt tears sting my eyes. The camera. I had set up an alert system that would notify Detective Alvarez if certain keywords were detected. I had never told Ryan about her. I hadn't trusted anyone enough.
But now, watching Margaret's world crumble, I knew I had made the right choice.
"You set me up," Margaret whispered, her eyes locking onto mine. "You little bitch."
"Mother!" Ryan looked horrified.
Detective Alvarez moved between us. "Margaret Whitmore, Caleb Voss—you're both under arrest. You have the right to remain silent..."
As she read them their rights, Ryan turned back to me. He looked broken. Confused. Guilty.
"Claire," he said, reaching for my hand. "I... I had no idea. I swear to you, I had no idea what she was planning."
I looked at his hand for a long moment before I took it.
I wanted to believe him. I really did.
But I had spent too long watching the Whitmore family lie, cheat, and manipulate to trust anyone completely.
Not even my own husband.
"I know," I said softly, even though I didn't know at all. "I know you didn't."
As Margaret and Caleb were led away in handcuffs—Margaret screaming about how her lawyers would destroy everyone—I held Ryan's hand and thought about the camera still rolling in the vent.

It had captured everything.
But the question was: what else had it captured that I didn't already know?
