Chapter 1

"My husband ripped off my blanket and sneered, 'Stop pretending.' The moment he saw the bruises covering my legs and heard me whisper, 'Please… don't let them take my baby,' every drop of color drained from his face. Outside, his mother smirked beside their lawyer cousin, clutching pre-signed custody papers. 'A crazy woman like you doesn't deserve a child,' she mocked, convinced victory was hers. None of them realized a hidden camera had captured every threat... and someone was about to destroy the Whitmore family from within.
Ryan Whitmore yanked the hospital cover back, convinced I was putting on an act. Yet, the moment his eyes fell upon the alarming, deep-hued bruises spanning my legs, he lost all his color. I clutched his wrist, my voice a broken, frantic murmur: 'Please... don't let them take my baby.'
For the initial time in our three-year marriage, Ryan looked completely shocked.
Waiting just outside of Room 508, his mother, Margaret, stood in a sharp, cream-colored ensemble, smiling as if the world belonged to her. Next to her was Caleb, the family's cutthroat lawyer, his eyes devoid of warmth, holding a leather folder tightly to his torso.
Inside that folder sat a stack of pre-prepared documents: Custody surrender. Medical consent. A request for a psychiatric evaluation. They had prepared it all before I had even finished giving birth.
Two hours earlier, with Ryan away, Margaret had loomed over me. She came so close that her expensive perfume made it hard to breathe. 'You're losing your mind, Claire Bennett,' she hissed, her expression venomous. 'After the birth, the baby will live with us. You'll be taken to a quiet facility to 'get better'.'
Caleb tossed the papers onto my tray. 'Sign it, or we'll file for emergency guardianship.'
When I refused, Margaret's grin vanished. Two nurses she had clearly paid off forced my arms down while Caleb tried to make me sign. I fought back so hard that my legs were repeatedly struck against the metal bed frame. That was how I got those nasty bruises.
But I stopped my efforts the moment I saw a tiny, dark pinhole in the ceiling vent.
A hidden camera. My own.
Before I became the quiet wife they used to mock at charity events, I worked as a forensic accountant for the state. I knew exactly how powerful families hid their dirty deeds. After months of Margaret implying I was 'too fragile' to raise a child, I had hidden cameras in every room I controlled—including this one.
In the present, Ryan stared at my skin as if the marks were branded into him. 'Claire,' he whispered, his voice shaky. 'Who did this to you?'
I looked slowly toward the door. 'Your family.'
As if on cue, the door opened and Margaret strode in, looking saccharine. 'Well? Did she play her part well enough to fool you, Ryan?'

My husband slowly turned to face his mother.
And I just smiled, waiting for the untouchable Whitmore empire to shatter..."
