Chapter 9

The hearing ended at 5:00 p.m.

The judge didn’t make a decision.

She said she needed time to review the new evidence. She ordered both defendants held without bail for another seventy-two hours. She would rule then.

I walked out of the courthouse into the cold evening air.

Reporters swarmed me.

“Mr. Hale! Did you know your wife was filing for divorce?”

“Mr. Hale! Is it true you fabricated the evidence?”

“Mr. Hale! Did you kill your own wife?”

I didn’t answer.

I pushed through them. I got in my car. I drove away.

I called Marcus.

“What the hell was that? Hannah was not filing for divorce. We were happy. We were having a baby. She would never—”

“I know, Nathan. I know. It’s a fake. The signature is forged. It’s good, but it’s fake. I’ve seen Hannah’s signature a hundred times. The loops on the H are wrong. The cross on the t is too high. They forged it. Your mother must have had someone do it. She has access to every document Hannah ever signed. It’s easy.”

“Can you prove it?”

“I already have a handwriting expert on it. He’ll have a report by tomorrow morning. It’s definitely a forgery. But Nathan... it doesn’t matter what we know. It matters what the judge believes. And right now, she’s confused. That document was enough to plant a seed of doubt. If that seed grows... they walk. And if they walk... they will kill you. You know that, right?”

“I know.”

I hung up.

I drove to the bank.

Downtown Asheville. Bank of America.

The safety deposit box.

Hannah’s key.

I walked in. I showed my ID. I signed the book. The clerk led me to the vault.

Box 7749.

I put the key in. I turned it. The door clicked open.

I pulled the metal box out. I set it on the table in the private viewing room.

I opened it.

There were three things inside.

First. A stack of letters. Bound with a blue ribbon. Letters I had written to Hannah when we were dating. She had kept every single one.

Second. The ultrasound picture. Our son. 12 weeks. He looked like a little peanut. Hannah had written on the back in her messy handwriting: James Nathan Hale. Already has your stubborn chin.

Third. An envelope.

My name on the front.

*Nathan. Only open if everything goes wrong.*

I opened it.

My hands were shaking.

Two pieces of paper fell out.

The first was a handwritten letter from Hannah. Dated the day before I left for Chicago.

*My Dearest Nathan,*

*If you’re reading this, I’m dead. And Caleb and Mom did it. I know they’re going to try to frame you. They’re going to say you killed me. They’re going to forge documents. They’re going to lie. They’re very good at lying.*

*But I’m one step ahead of them.*

*I recorded everything. The day Caleb came to the house. The day he threatened me. I hid a camera in the study. A small one. In the clock on the mantel. It records to a cloud server. Everything is saved. Everything. If they did it... if they hurt me... it’s all on tape. Every word. Every second.*

*The login is on the second piece of paper. Go get it. Show it to the police. Show it to the world. Don’t let them get away with this.*

*And Nathan... one more thing. I was never filing for divorce. Never. I loved you more than anything in the world. You are the best thing that ever happened to me. If they show you papers... they’re fake. Don’t believe them. Don’t ever doubt us.*

*Take care of our boy. Tell him about me. Tell him I loved him so much it hurt.*

*Goodbye, my love.*

*Forever yours,*

*Hannah*

I cried then.

For the first time since I found her in that coffin.

I cried hard. I cried until I couldn’t breathe. I held her letter to my chest. I could almost smell her perfume.

I picked up the second piece of paper.

A website. A username. A password.

I pulled out my phone. I typed it in.

The video loaded.

I pressed play.

The study.

Hannah was sitting at the desk. She was working. She looked beautiful. Pregnant. Glowing.

Then the door opened.

Caleb walked in.

He was wearing the navy jacket.

The video was timestamped.

9:17 a.m.

Two days before the funeral.

I watched.

I listened.

I heard every word.

I saw everything.

Caleb yelling. Demanding the documents. Hannah refusing. Caleb slapping her. Hannah fighting back. Scratching his neck. Caleb grabbing her. My mother walking in. Watching. Telling Caleb to finish it. The syringe. Hannah’s eyes. Wide. Terrified. Unable to move. Unable to scream.

It was all there.

Every horrible second.

Thirty-two minutes of pure evil.

I stopped the video.

I called Detective Carter.

She answered on the first ring.

“Nathan? What is it?”

“Carter. I have it. I have the whole thing. On video. Everything. They did it. I watched them.”

There was a long silence.

“Send it to me. Now.”

“I’m sending it. And Carter? It’s over. No more doubt. No more lies. It’s all there.”

I hit send.

I sat in the little room for another hour.

I held Hannah’s letters.

May you like

I held the ultrasound picture.

And I waited.
