Chapter 4

I woke up at 6:00 a.m.

I had slept for two hours.

I drank three cups of terrible motel coffee. I opened my laptop. I logged into the secure account Marcus had set up.

Hannah’s files.

Hundreds of them.

Bank statements. Wire transfer records. Company ledgers. Emails. Text message screenshots.

She had been thorough.

Brutally thorough.

Over the past eighteen months, Caleb had siphoned more than $4.7 million from Hale Industries. He had moved it through seven different shell companies. He had bought a penthouse in Miami. A yacht in the Bahamas. A diamond bracelet for some woman I had never heard of.

And my mother had signed off on every single transfer.

Every. Single. One.

Her signature was on the bottom of every document.

She knew.

She had always known.

She had let Caleb steal because Caleb was the son she was proud of. Caleb was the son who was tough. Caleb was the son who would run the business the way she wanted it run.

And me?

I was the disappointment.

The son who read books. The son who married a girl from the wrong side of the tracks. The son who cared more about saving old mills than making millions.

Hannah had seen it all.

She had spent months collecting evidence. She had planned to go to the board of directors two days after I came home. She was going to have Caleb fired. Arrested. She was going to take over the company with me. We were going to fix everything. We were going to give our son a legacy he could be proud of.

Instead, they killed her.

I closed the laptop.

I got in the car.

I had one stop to make before I went to war.

The cemetery.

They had buried Hannah yesterday. While I was in the motel room, pretending I was still in Chicago. They had buried her and our son together in the family plot. Without me.

I parked near the gate. I walked through the headstones. The grass was still wet with dew. The morning sun came through the oak trees in long, golden bars.

I found her grave easily.

The dirt was fresh.

No headstone yet.

Just a small metal marker.

*HANNAH MARIE HALE*

*BELOVED WIFE AND MOTHER*

*1994 – 2024*

And underneath, in smaller letters:

*AND HER INFANT SON, JAMES NATHAN HALE*

I knelt down.

I touched the dirt.

“James,” I whispered. “That’s the name we picked. She told them. She told them his name.”

I sat there for a long time.

I didn’t cry.

I had no tears left.

“I’m going to make this right, baby. I promise. Both of you. I’m going to take everything from them. Everything they love. And I’m going to make sure they spend the rest of their lives in a cell thinking about what they did.”

I stood up.

I brushed the dirt off my knees.

I turned around.

My mother was standing ten feet away.

She was wearing black again. She was holding a single red rose. Her face was perfect. No tears. No guilt. Nothing.

“I knew you’d come here,” she said.

I said nothing.

“You should have stayed in Chicago, Nathan. We could have made this easy for you. We could have given you money. A house somewhere far away. You could have started over.”

She took a step toward me.

“But you had to be difficult. You had to dig. Just like Hannah.”

My voice was steady.

“You killed her, Mom.”

It wasn’t a question.

She smiled. A cold, thin smile.

“Your brother lost his temper. That’s all. She was going to destroy everything we built. Everything your father worked for. She was a greedy little girl who thought she deserved the world just because she spread her legs for my weaker son.”

I took a step toward her.

“Don’t you ever talk about her like that.”

“Or what? You’ll hit me? You’ve never hit anyone in your life, Nathan. You’re weak. Just like your father was. That’s why I had to run everything. That’s why Caleb had to take over. Because you’re not strong enough.”

She tossed the rose onto the grave. It landed on the fresh dirt like a drop of blood.

“Here’s what’s going to happen,” she said. “You’re going to go back to whatever motel you’re hiding in. You’re going to pack your bags. You’re going to leave North Carolina and never come back. If you do that, we’ll send you five thousand dollars a month for the rest of your life. You can drink yourself to death in Mexico for all I care.”

She paused.

“But if you don’t... if you keep digging... if you go to the police... then you’re going to have an accident. Just like Hannah. Do you understand me, Nathan?”

I looked at her.

The woman who had given birth to me.

The woman who had taught me how to ride a bike.

The woman who had kissed my scraped knees when I was little.

And now she was threatening to kill me.

“Is that a threat, Mom?”

“It’s a promise.”

She turned and walked back to her car. She got in. She drove away without looking back.

I stood there for another minute.

Then I pulled out my phone.

I pressed play.

I had recorded every word.

*Just like Hannah.*

*You’re going to have an accident.*

Perfect.

I sent the recording to Marcus.

May you like

Then I called the Asheville Police Department.

“Hello. My name is Nathan Hale. I want to report a double murder. My wife, Hannah Hale, and my unborn son, James Hale. I have evidence. And I have a confession.”
