Chapter 7

That afternoon, Helen went to the bank.

She wanted to see exactly what had happened to their accounts.

But when she gave her name, the manager looked nervous.

“Mrs. Whitmore... we have orders not to release any information to you.”

“Orders from who?”

“From Mr. Whitmore and the foundation.”

“I am his legal wife! I have the marriage license right here!”

“I’m sorry. I can’t help you.”

She walked out feeling like a ghost in her own life.

She called her brother, Mark.

He picked up on the first ring.

“I heard you’re back. Are you okay?”

“Not really. Grant married someone else. He’s trying to take everything.”

“I’m coming to you. Right now.”

Mark arrived an hour later. He pulled her into a hug and held her tight.

“I never liked the way he talked about you when you were gone. Always saying you were too busy, too far away. I told you then something wasn’t right.”

“I didn’t want to believe it.”

“Then we’ll make him believe it. We’ll dig up every record. Every witness. Every dollar he moved.”

That night, they sat at the hotel table with boxes of old files.

Letters from the early days.

Deployment orders.

Bank slips showing Helen’s salary going straight into their joint account.

And then Helen found something she had never seen before.

A folder marked V.P.

Inside were receipts for jewelry, trips, luxury cars.

And handwritten notes from Grant.

For my Vanessa—you deserve everything I couldn’t give her.

Soon we won’t have to hide anymore.

Once she’s gone, it’ll all be ours.

Helen dropped the paper.

Mark picked it up.

“He wrote these while you were deployed.”

“He was counting on me not coming back.”

They looked at each other.

And both knew what it meant.

This wasn’t just an affair.

May you like

It was a plan.

Months—maybe years—in the making.
