Chapter 4

Helen’s breath caught.
Vanessa set the photo down on the table like it was nothing.
“I heard voices,” she said calmly. “I wanted to make sure everyone was okay.”
She looked at Helen, then at Grant.
“Grant told me you’d be coming back soon. I just didn’t realize it would be today.”
Helen stepped closer.
“Take off my pendant.”
Vanessa’s smile didn’t falter.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“The silver star. Grant gave it to me the night I made colonel. Take it off.”
Grant stepped between them.
“Helen, that’s enough.”
“Get out of my way.”
“You have no right to speak to her like that.”
“I have every right! That is mine! Everything you’re living right now belongs to me!”
Vanessa reached up and touched the pendant gently.
“Grant gave it to me six months ago. He said you’d forgotten all about it.”
Something inside Helen snapped.
She lunged forward.
Grant caught her arms before she could reach Vanessa.
“Stop it!” he roared. “You look crazy right now!”
“Crazy?” Helen laughed, a sharp broken sound. “I look crazy? You’re the one living a lie with a stranger in my own home!”
Madison grabbed Helen’s arm.
“Mom, please. Let’s just go.”
Helen looked at her daughter’s terrified face. She looked at Grant, holding Vanessa like he was protecting her. She looked at the life she had built being handed to someone else piece by piece.
She pulled free from Grant’s grip.
“Fine,” she said. “You want this life? You can have it. But don’t think for one second I’m going to let you walk away with everything.”
She walked to the fireplace and took the photo with her face cut out.
“I’m going to find out exactly what you’ve been doing. Every lie. Every secret. Every penny you’ve spent pretending to be married to her while you were still married to me.”
She looked at Vanessa.
“And you... you can keep the pendant for now. But I promise you... I will take it back. And I will take back every single thing you stole from me.”
She turned and walked out the door.
Madison followed her.
Grant called after them.
“Helen, don’t do this!”
May you like
She didn’t look back.
She got in the car, started the engine, and drove away from the house that had stopped being her home a long time ago.
