Chapter 10

Helen walked out of the courthouse into bright sunlight.

Madison ran to her and hugged her tight.

Mark stood by the steps, smiling through tears.

Grant followed them out.

He looked smaller now.

Defeated.

“Helen...”

She stopped but did not turn around.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I was weak. I was afraid. I thought if I moved on I wouldn’t hurt so much anymore.”

She turned slowly.

“Loneliness is not an excuse for theft. Or betrayal. Or erasing someone’s life.”

“I can fix this. We can start over.”

“We stopped being able to start over the day you decided to replace me instead of waiting for me.”

She looked at Vanessa, who stood alone on the steps.

“Take off the pendant.”

Vanessa hesitated, then unclasped the silver star and handed it over.

Helen held it in her palm.

It was cold.

But it was hers.

“I’m not going to fight you for the company,” Helen said to Grant. “I’m not going to fight you for the house. I’m not even going to fight you for the money.”

Grant looked surprised.

“Then what do you want?”

“I want my name back. I want my reputation back. And I want you to know that you never had me. You only ever had my absence.”

She turned and walked away.

She didn’t look back at the house.

She didn’t look back at the life that had been stolen.

She looked forward.

To the daughter who loved her.

To the brother who stood by her.

To the woman who had survived wars and deployments and betrayal, and was still standing.

That night, she sat in a quiet apartment with Madison.

She placed the silver star back around her own neck.

It fit perfectly.

Just like it always had.

And for the first time in months, she knew exactly who she was.

Helen Parker Whitmore.

Wife.

Mother.

May you like

Soldier.

And no one would ever take that away again.
