Chapter 26

Life moved fast after that.

Jake graduated from high school, went to college to study engineering.

The general turned 85, still sharp, still telling stories, still spoiling all the kids rotten.

Ryan and Sarah celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. They were happy, still working with at-risk kids at the community center, telling Ryan’s story, making sure no one else made the same mistakes he had.

Ethan and Megan celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary. They were still as in love as they had been on their wedding day. They took a trip to Italy, just the two of them, eating pasta, drinking wine, walking through the old streets of Rome, holding hands like teenagers.

Megan was promoted to Major General. She was now one of the highest-ranking women in the entire US military. She ran the entire family support program for the Army, helping millions of service members and their families every year. She was a hero to thousands of people. But to Lila, she was just Mom.

Lila graduated from West Point with honors. She was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, assigned to the same intelligence unit her mom had served in, in Afghanistan. She was following in Megan’s footsteps. Exactly like she had promised.

The day before she deployed, the whole family gathered at the house for dinner.

It was a quiet night. No big party. Just the family, sitting around the dinner table, eating the general’s famous ham, talking, laughing, trying not to think about Lila leaving.

After dinner, Lila pulled Megan aside, out on the porch.

She was in her dress uniform, her bars shiny on her collar. She looked so much like Megan had at that age. Brave. Scared. Ready.

"Mama," she said, handing Megan a small envelope. "I wrote this for you. For if... well, for if something happens to me over there. I want you to have it. Just in case."

Megan took the envelope, her hands shaking. She pulled Lila into a tight hug, holding her like she was still that tiny baby in the NICU, fighting for her life.

"Nothing is going to happen to you," she said, crying. "You’re going to come home. Safe. I know it. You’re a Hayes. We’re fighters. We always come home."

Lila hugged her back, crying too.

"I love you, Mama."

"I love you too, baby. More than anything. Come home to me. Okay?"

"Okay."

The next day, they watched Lila board the plane, waving until it was out of sight.

Megan held the envelope tight in her hand, praying she would never have to open it.
