Chapter 15

Life was perfect for two years.

Lila turned three. She was a wild, smart, stubborn little girl, with a head full of curls and a laugh that could fill a room. She started preschool. She loved painting, and dinosaurs, and playing soccer in the backyard. She called Ethan "Daddy" and the general "Papa." She had no idea Ryan existed.

Megan was promoted to Colonel. She ran her program full-time, helping thousands of survivors across the country. She and Ethan got engaged on Lila’s third birthday, in the backyard, surrounded by family and friends. Lila was the flower girl. She wore a pink dress and threw rose petals everywhere, yelling "MAMA GONNA KISS EFAN!"

They were planning their wedding for the following spring.

Then Ryan came back.

It was a Tuesday afternoon. Megan was at work. Ethan was picking Lila up from preschool. A man was standing by the playground fence, watching them.

He was thinner than he used to be. His hair was cut short. He had a scar on his left cheek. He was wearing jeans and a flannel shirt, holding a small teddy bear in his hand.

Ethan recognized him immediately.

He had seen photos of Ryan in the news. He had heard all the stories from Megan.

He picked Lila up, holding her tight, and walked toward the fence.

"Can I help you?" Ethan asked, his voice calm, steady, protective.

Ryan swallowed hard, his eyes fixed on Lila. She was playing with a strand of Ethan’s hair, completely unaware of him.

"I’m Ryan," he said, his voice rough. "Lila’s biological dad. I just moved back to town. I got a job here. I’ve been sober for three years. I’ve been going to therapy every week. I have a house. A steady income. I wrote Megan a letter a few months ago, asking if I could start supervised visits. She never wrote back. I thought... I thought I would come see her. Just for a minute. From a distance. I didn’t want to scare anyone."

Ethan studied him.

He could see the regret in Ryan’s eyes. The pain. The hope. He didn’t look like the selfish, arrogant man Megan had described. He looked broken. Tired. Desperate to do the right thing.

"You should have called first," Ethan said. "Megan isn’t here. And you can’t be here. This is Lila’s school. It’s not appropriate."

"I know," Ryan said, looking down. "I’m sorry. I just... I saw her photos on Megan’s Facebook. She’s so big. So beautiful. I missed everything. Her first steps. Her first words. Her birthdays. I just wanted to see her. For one second. That’s all."

Lila looked over at him, tilting her head.

"Who that, Daddy?" she asked, pointing at Ryan.

Ethan hugged her tighter.

"No one, baby. Just a friend. Come on, let’s go get ice cream. Your favorite—strawberry."

He turned and walked away, not looking back.

Ryan stood by the fence, watching them go, tears running down his face.

He had missed so much.

And he didn’t know if he would ever get any of it back.
