Chapter 22

Lila woke up three days later.
She was confused, and sore, and her head hurt, but she was alive. She smiled when she saw Megan, and Ethan, and Ryan, and Sarah, and the general, all crowded around her hospital bed, bringing her flowers and teddy bears and her favorite chocolate milk.
"Hi, Mama," she whispered, her voice hoarse.
"Hi, baby," Megan said, crying, kissing her forehead. "Hi, my sweet girl. You scared us so bad."
"Sorry," Lila said, grinning weakly. "Did I miss my soccer game?"
Everyone laughed, crying harder.
Lila spent six weeks in the hospital, then another three months in physical therapy, learning to walk again, to run again, to kick a soccer ball again. She was a fighter. Just like her mom. She worked hard every day, never complaining, never giving up.
By the time she was 11, she was back on the soccer field, scoring goals, faster and stronger than ever.
The accident brought the whole family even closer.
Ryan and Ethan became best friends. They coached Lila’s soccer team together. They went to Jake’s tee-ball games. They fixed cars together in Ryan’s garage on weekends. They were brothers, in every way that mattered.
Megan and Sarah became close too. They went to book club together. They planned the kids’ birthday parties. They supported each other when work was hard, when the kids were sick, when life got stressful.
They were a modern family.
A little messy.
A little complicated.
But full of love.
May you like
Full of forgiveness.
Full of second chances.
