Chapter 1

I came home early from a business trip and found my five-year-old son hiding in the closet with a bloody nose. When he whispered what my sister had done, I didn’t scream—I just picked up the phone.

My flight landed in Chicago almost a day early.

My husband, Ryan, was working overnight, so my sister Melissa had agreed to stay with our son, Noah.

When I unlocked the front door, the house was completely silent.

“Melissa?”

No answer.

Then I heard a tiny sound from upstairs.

It sounded like crying.

I ran to Noah’s bedroom and found his bed empty.

“Baby, where are you?”

The closet door moved.

I opened it and saw my son curled behind his clothes.

His nose had dried blood beneath it.

One side of his face was swollen.

My knees hit the floor.

“Who did this?”

Noah grabbed my shirt.

“Aunt Melissa.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

Then he whispered, “She said you wouldn’t believe me.”

I carried him downstairs and called 911.

Melissa walked in through the back door while I was still speaking to the dispatcher.

Her expression changed when she saw me.

“You’re supposed to be in Boston.”

“What happened to Noah?”

She immediately rolled her eyes.

“He had a tantrum and fell.”

From my arms, Noah started shaking.

That was all I needed to see.

Melissa stepped closer.

“Sarah, don’t make this into something it isn’t.”

I moved between her and my son.

Then I called my father.

Melissa laughed nervously.

“What’s Dad going to do?”

She didn’t know our father owned the daycare center where she worked.

She also didn’t know Noah had just whispered, “She does it to the kids there too.”

The laughter disappeared from her face.

My father answered on speaker.

Before I could explain, Noah said, “Grandpa, Aunt Melissa locks kids in the bathroom when they cry.”

There was silence.

Then my father asked one question.

“Noah, how do you know that?”

My son pointed toward Melissa’s purse.

“She showed me videos so I’d stay quiet.”

Melissa lunged for the purse.

I grabbed it first.

Inside was an old phone I had never seen before.

The screen was still unlocked.

And when I opened the video folder, there were dozens of recordings.

The first thumbnail showed Melissa inside my father’s daycare.

And she wasn’t alone.
