Chapter 30

Ethan stood at the kitchen window, looking out at the backyard.

It was early morning. The sun was just coming up.

In the yard, the oak tree they had planted all those years ago stood tall and strong.

Beneath it, his children played.

James, now sixteen, sat on a bench reading a book. He was going to be a doctor. He had already been accepted into a summer program at the university.

William, also sixteen, was practicing a monologue for the school play. He was going to be a star. Everyone said so.

Michael, sixteen too, was doing push-ups. He had been accepted into the police academy's youth program. He was going to protect people. Just like he had always promised.

Olivia, now eleven, was practicing her martial arts forms. She was fierce. She was strong. She was going to change the world.

Claire came up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist.

“Penny for your thoughts?”

Ethan placed his hands over hers.

“I was just thinking... about that day I woke up in the hospital. About how my mother told me you had left me. About how I didn't believe her. About how I dragged myself across the state to find you.”

He turned in her arms to face her.

“I found you at the market. Selling bread. Just like we did when we were young. And for a moment, I thought I had lost you. I thought you had moved on. But then I saw you were pregnant. And I knew. I knew we would find our way back to each other.”

Claire smiled.

“We did.”

“We did. And look what we built.”

He looked back out the window at their children.

“Four amazing kids. A company that does good in the world. A bakery that changes lives. A love that survived everything.”

Ethan looked at his wife.

She was still the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Stronger now. Wiser. But still his Claire.

The woman who had believed in him when no one else would.

The woman who had loved him through poverty and wealth and loss and everything in between.

The woman who was his home.

“Do you remember what I told you once?” Ethan said. “That if I ever got lost, all I'd have to do is taste one of your pastries to find my way back to you?”

Claire laughed.

“I remember. I told you not to say silly things.”

“It wasn't silly. It was true. Even when I was lost in that coma. Even when I didn't know who I was. Some part of me remembered. Some part of me knew you were waiting. Knew I had to find my way back.”

He kissed her.

Softly.

Tenderly.

A kiss that contained every word he had ever wanted to say. Every emotion he had ever felt.

Outside, the sun rose higher.

The children laughed.

The oak tree stood strong.

And Ethan Parker, who had once been declared dead, knew without a shadow of a doubt that he was more alive than he had ever been.

He had found his way back.

He had found his home.

May you like

And he would never let go.

The End
