Chapter 21

Olivia changed everything.

The house, which had already been chaotic with three boys, became a beautiful, wonderful, loud mess of diapers and bottles and tiny dresses and three boys who were absolutely obsessed with their baby sister.

Ethan watched it all with a full heart.

He had built a company from nothing. He had survived a plane crash and a coma. He had faced down murderers and liars and betrayers.

But nothing had ever prepared him for the overwhelming love he felt for his daughter.

She had him wrapped around her tiny finger from day one.

When she cried, he came running. When she reached for him, his heart melted. When she looked at him with those big eyes, he would have given her the world.

Claire teased him about it.

“She's going to have you wrapped around her finger,” she would say.

“Already does,” Ethan would admit.

As Olivia grew, her personality emerged.

She was strong-willed. Determined. She knew what she wanted and she would not be denied.

She had her mother's spirit.

And she had her brothers wrapped around her finger too.

James would read to her. Even when she was too small to understand.

William would dance with her. Sing to her. Make her laugh.

Michael would protect her. If anyone got too close, if anyone tried to take her toys, Michael was there. Growling. Defending.

It was perfect.

The Second Chance Bakery continued to grow.

They opened locations in Atlanta and Savannah. They launched a line of frozen pastries sold nationwide. They had trained over a hundred women, changing lives and families.

Claire became a public figure. Not because she sought the spotlight, but because her story was so powerful. A woman who had lost everything, who had been betrayed and cast aside, who had built a business and a movement that helped others.

She was invited to speak at conferences. At universities. At the White House.

Ethan was proud of her. So proud it sometimes hurt.

But he also worried.

The spotlight brought attention. And attention could bring danger.

He hired more security. Installed better systems. Made sure his family was always protected.

He would never let anything happen to them.

Not again.

One evening, as they sat on the back porch watching the boys play with Olivia in the yard, Claire leaned her head against Ethan's shoulder.

“Do you ever think about them?” she asked quietly.

Ethan knew who she meant.

Margaret.

Hale.

“Sometimes,” he said. “Usually only when something reminds me. Like when I see Olivia and realize how different our family could have been if they had won.”

“I heard from Vanessa,” Claire said.

Ethan looked at her.

“Is she okay?”

“She's good. She got married. She has a little girl. She sent a photo.”

Ethan was quiet for a moment.

“Does she... does she ever want to come back?”

“No. She says this is her home now. Her new life. But she wanted us to know she's happy. And she asked about the kids. About Olivia.”

“Maybe someday,” Ethan said. “When the kids are older. Maybe they can meet their aunt.”

“Maybe.”

They sat in silence for a while, watching their children play.

James was showing Olivia how to build with blocks.

William was spinning in circles, making Olivia laugh.

Michael was standing guard, making sure no bugs got too close to his sister.

“Ethan?” Claire said.

“Yeah?”

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For fighting for us. For coming back. For never giving up.”

May you like

Ethan kissed the top of her head.

“Always.”
