Chapter 24

James turned eight.

He was growing into a remarkable young man.

Smart. Kind. Thoughtful.

He had his father's analytical mind and his mother's compassionate heart.

He loved to read. To learn. To figure out how things worked.

For his birthday, he asked for one thing: to meet the man who had saved his father's life.

The doctor who had treated Ethan when he was brought into the hospital as an unidentified patient. The doctor who had refused to give up on him. Who had kept him alive for seven months.

Ethan had stayed in touch with Dr. Chen over the years. They had become friends.

He arranged for Dr. Chen to come to dinner.

James was starstruck.

He asked Dr. Chen a hundred questions about medicine. About the brain. About comas.

Dr. Chen answered every one patiently.

After dinner, as Dr. Chen was leaving, he pulled Ethan aside.

“He's a remarkable boy,” he said. “You and Claire have done something very right.”

“We try,” Ethan said.

Dr. Chen looked at him.

“You know, when you were brought in... burned. Broken. No identification. No one knew who you were. Most doctors would have focused on keeping you comfortable. On letting you go. But something about you... I don't know. I just knew you had people who loved you. People who were waiting for you. I'm glad I was right.”

Ethan looked through the window at his family.

James was reading to Olivia.

William was trying to teach Michael how to do a magic trick.

Claire was watching them all, a smile on her face.

“Me too, Doctor,” Ethan said. “Me too.”

That night, as Ethan lay in bed beside Claire, he thought about how close he had come to never seeing any of this.

How close he had come to dying in that plane crash. To never waking up from that coma. To never finding Claire again. To never meeting his children.

A single decision. A single doctor who had refused to give up.

And everything had changed.

“Ethan?” Claire whispered.

“Yeah?”

“Are you okay?”

“I'm perfect.”

He pulled her close.

“I was just thinking... about how lucky we are.”

Claire snuggled against him.

“We are lucky. But we also fought for this. We earned it.”

Ethan kissed her.

“We did.”

Outside, the oak tree swayed in the wind.

Inside, four children slept peacefully.

And Ethan Parker, who had been declared dead once, had never felt more alive.
