Chapter 1

A stranger on the New York subway grabbed my wrist and told me to soak my anniversary necklace in water overnight. I thought she was crazy—until the water revealed a message my husband never expected me to see.

My husband, Ethan, gave me the necklace on our tenth anniversary.

He told me it had belonged to his grandmother.

I wore it almost every day.

Two weeks later, I was riding the subway home from my Manhattan office when an older woman sat across from me.

She kept staring at my necklace.

At first, I ignored her.

Then she suddenly grabbed my wrist.

“Take that off tonight.”

I pulled away.

“Excuse me?”

Her eyes stayed fixed on the pendant.

“Put it in a glass of water overnight.”

I stood to move seats.

She whispered, “If your husband gave you that, you need to know.”

My stomach tightened.

“How do you know my husband?”

But the train doors opened.

She disappeared into the crowd before answering.

That night, I almost forgot about her.

Then Ethan called to say he was working late.

Something made me take off the necklace.

I dropped it into a glass of water and left it beside the sink.

The next morning, the water had turned cloudy.

A thin layer on the pendant had started peeling away.

Underneath was tiny engraved writing.

I held it beneath the kitchen light.

Three words became visible.

FOR MY EMILY.

My name is Sarah.

I stared at those words until my hands started shaking.

When Ethan came home, I didn’t confront him.

Instead, I searched his grandmother’s name online.

She had never owned that necklace.

Then I searched “Emily” with Ethan’s last name.

The first result was an old engagement announcement from eleven years earlier.

The man beside Emily in the photograph was my husband.

But that wasn’t what made me stop breathing.

Emily was wearing the exact necklace around her neck.

And beneath the article was an update posted eight months later.

Emily had disappeared.

I heard Ethan’s key turning in the front door.

Before I could close the page, another message appeared on my phone from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of the subway woman.

Under it were six words:

“She was Emily’s mother. Don’t trust Ethan.”
