Chapter 8

Eight o’clock.
Ethan and Clara walk into Harrison’s study together.
The two old men are already there.
Harrison behind his desk.
Robert Bennett in a chair by the fire.
He looks smaller than Ethan remembers.
Beaten.
Defeated.
He can’t look Clara in the eye.
“You wanted to see us,” Harrison says.
Calm.
Too calm.
Ethan drops the file on the desk.
“Twenty years. Forty-seven million dollars. Embezzled. Laundered. Hidden. Robert here helped you every step of the way. And when Clara and I got too close to finding out… you destroyed us. Told me she was gone. Told her I was dead. Paid Robert off to keep his mouth shut. All to protect your little criminal empire.”
Harrison doesn’t even look at the file.
“Is that all you’ve got?”
Ethan blinks.
“That’s enough to put both of you away for life.”
Harrison smiles.
Cold.
Cruel.
“Ordinarily, yes. But you see… I’ve been making some calls of my own. While you were playing detective and Little League coach.”
He opens a drawer.
Pulls out a file of his own.
Slides it across the desk.
“Read it, Ethan. It’s about your good friend Mark Henderson.”
Ethan doesn’t move.
“Mark Henderson served five years in prison for manslaughter. Drunk driving. Killed a sixteen-year-old girl. Got out, changed his name, moved here. Met Clara. Built a whole new life. All on a lie.”
The room goes cold.
Clara makes a small sound.
“No.”
“Check for yourself. His real name is Marcus Hale. Convicted in 2014. Released 2019. Changed his name legally six months later. He never told you, did he, Clara? Never told you he was a convicted felon. That he killed a child.”
Harrison leans forward.
“Now, here’s what’s going to happen. You’re going to burn your little file. You’re going to forget everything you think you know. You’re going to leave town. And you’re never going to come back. And you’re never going to see Lucas again.”
“Or?” Ethan says quietly.
“Or I send this file to every news outlet in the state. I send it to the school. To the Little League. To every parent in town. Mark Henderson goes back to prison. Clara’s reputation is destroyed. And Lucas? Lucas finds out the man he calls ‘Dad’ is a killer who lied to him his whole life. You want to talk about ruining the boy, Ethan? This will ruin him. Forever.”
Harrison smiles.
“So. What’s it going to be?”
Ethan looks at Clara.
Her face is white.
She’s staring at Mark’s file.
At the mugshot.
At the police report.
The man she married.
The man she trusted with her son.
A killer.
A liar.
Ethan makes his choice.
He picks up his file.
Feeds it into the fireplace.
Page by page.
The proof of eighteen years of suffering…
…turns to ash.
“Good,” Harrison says.
“Now get out. And I don’t want to see you in this town again.”
Ethan grabs Clara’s arm.
Pulls her toward the door.
“Ethan—” she starts.
“Not a word. Not here.”
They get in the truck.
Drive away.
Clara is shaking.
“He killed someone. He killed a girl. And he never told me. All these years… he never told me.”
“I know.”
“What do I do? What do I tell Lucas? He loves him. He calls him Dad. If I tell him… it’ll break him. If I don’t… I’m just as bad as my father. Just as bad as Harrison.”
Ethan pulls over.
Stops the truck.
Turns to her.
“We do nothing. Tonight. We go home. We be with Lucas. And tomorrow… we figure it out. But Harrison isn’t getting away with this. I gave him my word I’d burn the file. I did. But I have three more copies. In three different states. With three different friends. Harrison thinks he won. But he just made the biggest mistake of his life.”
He grips the steering wheel.
“He brought Mark into this. He threatened my son. Again. That’s a line you don’t cross. And now… now I’m not just going to destroy him. I’m going to make him beg.”
Clara looks at him.
The man she loves.
The father of her child.

And she knows.
Harrison Carter has no idea what’s coming for him.
