Chapter 2

Ethan sits at Clara’s kitchen table.

The ball sits between them.

Like a bomb.

Like a miracle.

Lucas is in his room.

Doing homework.

Or pretending to.

Ethan can hear him moving around upstairs.

Every footstep feels like a revelation.

“He knows about you,” Clara says quietly.

Ethan’s head snaps up.

“He does?”

“I told him his father was a good man. That circumstances kept us apart. I never wanted him to think he was unwanted. That you didn’t love him.”

Ethan’s throat tightens.

He reaches across the table.

Tries to take her hand.

She pulls back.

Not cruel.

Just… careful.

Eight years of marriage will do that.

The words hit Ethan like ice water.

“You’re married.”

It’s not a question.

He saw the ring.

Plain gold.

On her left hand.

“His name is Mark. Mark Henderson. He’s a good man, Ethan. He’s been Lucas’s father since he was two. He loves him like his own.”

The words taste like poison.

“Then why give him the ball?”

Clara looks down.

“Because Lucas has been asking questions. He found an old photo of you. In a box in the attic. He wanted to know who you were. And I… I couldn’t lie anymore. Not completely. I told him the truth. That you were his biological father. That if he ever found you, or you found him, the ball would be how he’d know.”

She pauses.

Swallows hard.

“I never thought it would actually happen. Not like this. Not with you backing your truck into my driveway because a nine-year-old hit it with a baseball.”

A dry, bitter laugh escapes her.

Ethan doesn’t laugh.

“I want to meet him. Properly. As his father.”

“Ethan—”

“I have rights, Clara. Legal rights. I’m not going to use them to hurt you. Or him. But I’m not walking away again. Not this time. Not after finding out I have a son.”

He leans forward.

“Mark Henderson can be whatever he wants to be. Stepfather. Mentor. Friend. But I’m his father. And I’m going to be in his life. Whether anyone likes it or not.”

Clara’s eyes flash.

“You think you can just show up after nine years and be Dad? You think it works like that? He calls Mark ‘Dad,’ Ethan. He doesn’t even know your name. What do you think happens when I tell him the man who yelled at him for hitting a truck is his real father? What do you think that does to him?”

She’s right.

She’s absolutely right.

And Ethan hates it.

“Then tell me what to do. Tell me how to fix this. But don’t tell me to leave. I won’t do it.”

Before she can answer, the front door opens.

Heavy footsteps.

A man’s voice.

“Clara? You home? I saw the truck in the driveway and—”

Mark Henderson stops in the kitchen doorway.

He’s tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Wearing a construction vest over a flannel shirt.

Calloused hands.

Good hands.

Hands that have built things.

Hands that have raised Ethan’s son.

He looks from Clara to Ethan.

To the ball on the table.

His jaw tightens.

“Who are you?”

Ethan stands.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

He’s taller than Mark.

Broader in the shoulders.

Years of military training sit under his skin.

Ready.

“Ethan Carter.”

He holds out a hand.

Mark doesn’t take it.

“Carter,” he says instead.

The name hangs in the air.

Clara had told him.

Of course she had.

You don’t marry a woman with a son and not ask about the father.

“You’re him.”

“I’m him.”

Mark’s eyes flick to Clara.

“You want to tell me what he’s doing in our kitchen?”

Our kitchen.

Our house.

Our son.

The words land like blows.

Ethan doesn’t flinch.

“Lucas hit my truck with that ball. I recognized the writing on it. My writing. From when I was eighteen.”

He taps the ball.

“Clara gave it to him. Told him if anyone ever recognized it, that person was his real father.”

Mark’s face goes pale.

He looks at Clara.

“You said you lost that ball. You said it was gone years ago.”

Clara’s face crumples.

“Mark, I—”

“You lied to me.”

It’s not angry.

Not yet.

Just… hurt.

Deep and real.

Ethan almost feels bad for him.

Almost.

“I didn’t lie about anything that matters,” Clara says quietly. “I love you. I married you. I built this life with you. That hasn’t changed. But Lucas has been asking. And I couldn’t… I couldn’t keep it all inside anymore.”

The front door creaks open upstairs.

Small footsteps on the landing.

“Mom? Dad? Is everything okay?”

All three adults freeze.

Lucas appears at the bottom of the stairs.

He looks at the three of them.

At the tension thick enough to cut.

His eyes land on Ethan.

Then on the ball.

Then back to his mother.

“Is it true?”

May you like

His small voice breaks the silence.

“Is he my dad?”
