Chapter 7

Ethan starts digging the next day.
He has resources.
Money.
Connections.
Friends in low places from his army days.
People who know how to find things.
Things powerful men want hidden.
It takes three weeks.
But he finds it.
Oh, he finds it.
Harrison Carter has been embezzling from his own company for twenty years.
Siphoning money into offshore accounts.
Hiding it in shell companies.
Robert Bennett—Clara’s father—helped him.
He was the accountant.
The man who cooked the books.
The man who made it all disappear.
And the reason they separated Ethan and Clara?
It was never about class.
Never about “doing the right thing.”
It was blackmail.
Clara was pregnant.
She’d found out about the fraud by accident.
Heard her father on the phone.
Seventeen years old.
Scared.
She’d told Ethan.
Or started to.
And the two fathers realized.
If these two kids stayed together…
…the secret would come out.
So they separated them.
Told Ethan Clara was gone.
Told Clara Ethan was dead.
And paid her father hush money.
Millions.
To keep his mouth shut.
To keep Clara quiet.
To make sure the boy never found out who he really was.
Ethan sits in his hotel room.
Reads the file.
Page after page.
Bank statements.
Wire transfers.
Handwritten notes.
All the proof he needs.
Enough to put both men in prison for the rest of their lives.
Enough to destroy the Carter name forever.
He drives to Clara’s house.
She’s alone.
Mark moved into a motel three days ago.
They’re talking about separation.
About lawyers.
About everything Ethan has broken.
He lays the file on her kitchen table.
The same table where it all started.
“Read it.”
Clara looks at him.
Then at the file.
She opens it.
Reads the first page.
Then the next.
Her hands start to shake.
“No…”
“Keep going.”
She does.
Page after page.
When she gets to the part about her father—
Her own father—
helping Harrison…
…she drops the file like it’s on fire.
“No. He wouldn’t. My dad would never—”
“He did, Clara. He did it for money. And to keep you quiet. Because you knew. You were seventeen and you heard him on the phone and you were going to tell someone. So they got rid of me. And they paid him off. And they made sure we never found each other.”
Clara sinks into a chair.
Her face ashen.
“My whole life… my father told me he loved me. That he protected me. That he was sorry Ethan died. All this time… he was the reason you were gone.”
She looks up.
Eyes wild.
“Lucas. He held Lucas when he was a baby. He came to every birthday. Every Christmas. He… he bought him his first glove.”
The realization is too much.
She doubles over.
Vomits into the sink.
Ethan holds her hair back.
Waits while she washes her face.
While she sobs.
While her whole world crumbles for the second time.
“What do we do?” she whispers.
“We end it. Tonight. We go to my father’s house. We bring your father. We lay it all out. And then we call the police.”
Clara shakes her head.
“The press. The scandal. Lucas… it’ll be everywhere. His name. His face. Everyone will know. He’ll be ‘the Carter love child’ forever.”
“Then we give them a choice. They confess everything. Publicly. They give up every dime they stole. They resign from everything. And they leave this town. Forever. Or we go to the FBI. And they spend the rest of their lives in a cell. Either way… they’re done.”
He squeezes her shoulders.
“They took eighteen years from us. But we can give Lucas his future. Clean. Without these monsters hanging over him.”
Clara looks at him.
Through the tears.
Through the pain.
And he sees the girl he fell in love with.
Tough.
Brave.
Unbreakable.
“Okay,” she says.
“Okay.”
Ethan calls his father.
Tells him to be at the house at eight.
With Robert Bennett.
And to come alone.
Harrison agrees.
Too easily.
Ethan should have known.
Should have smelled the trap.
But he’s angry.
And he’s in a hurry.

And he wants this over.
So he doesn’t see it coming.
