Chapter 18

The world stopped.

The hospital room went silent.

The machines beeped.

My father’s voice continued from the recorder.

I was drunk that night. The night of your bachelorette party. You were at the hotel with your friends. Derek was at the house with me, celebrating. We both drank too much. He passed out on the couch. And I… I went into your bedroom. I thought you were there. But it was the night before the wedding. You’d already moved your things to the hotel. I don’t know what came over me. I was lonely. I was angry about the Callahan thing. And I…

The voice broke.

I’m sorry, Elara. I’m so sorry.

When Lily was born… I knew. The timing was wrong. The blood type was wrong. I did a DNA test when she was six months old. It’s mine. She’s mine. I’ve watched her grow up. I’ve loved her more than anything in the world. But I’ve never dared tell you. I knew it would destroy you.

If Derek ever finds out… he will kill her. Or he will use her to destroy you. You have to protect her, Elara. No matter what. She is your daughter. And she is mine. And she is innocent in all of this.

Whatever happens…

Know that I did it all for you.

The recording stopped.

Derek slipped the recorder back into his pocket.

He was smiling.

A cold, dead smile.

“Surprise,” he said.

I couldn’t breathe.

I couldn’t think.

My father.

My own father.

He’d…

“Nine months before Lily was born,” Derek said softly. “Nine months exactly. I always wondered why she looked so much like your father and nothing like me. I always thought it was just… strong genes. But no. It was something much worse, wasn’t it?”

He took a step toward me.

“You played the perfect wife for seven years. You let me believe she was mine. You let me love her. You let me raise her. And all the time… she was your sister. Your father’s daughter. Your incestuous little secret.”

“Get out,” I whispered.

“Get out? Elara, I just found out the woman I married had a child with her own father. Do you have any idea what this is worth? The tabloids will pay me millions for this story. The courts will take one look at this and give me full custody of Lily. Because no judge in the world is going to give a child to a woman who’s covering up incest.”

He leaned in close.

“Here’s the new deal. You sign over everything. Every last dollar. Every building. Every share. The whole Langford fortune. And you give me full custody of Lily. And in return… I bury the tape. No one ever has to know what your father did. You get to keep your reputation. You get to stay out of prison for covering it up. And I get… everything.”

I looked at my father.

Still in the coma.

Still breathing.

The man who’d done this.

The man I’d loved.

The man I’d trusted.

And I thought of Lily.

My daughter.

My sister.

Oh God.

“You’re sick,” I said. “You’re actually sick.”

“I’m sick? Your father raped his own daughter on the night before her wedding and you’re calling me sick?” Derek laughed. “I’m just the guy who’s finally going to make the Langfords pay for everything they’ve done. Starting with you.”

He pulled a stack of papers from his briefcase and threw them on the bed beside my father.

“Sign them. Now. Or I call the press. I call the police. I call Child Protective Services. And by tonight, your daughter is in foster care and you’re under arrest for incest and conspiracy.”

I looked at the papers.

Quitclaim deeds.

Trust transfers.

Custody agreements.

Everything.

If I signed, I lost it all.

If I didn’t… I lost Lily forever.

And the whole world would know what my father had done.

I picked up the pen.

My hand shook so badly I could barely hold it.

“Sign it, Elara,” Derek said. “Sign it and it all goes away.”

I touched the pen to the paper.

And then I stopped.

I looked at Derek.

Really looked at him.

He was enjoying this.

Every second of my pain was like a drug to him.

And I realized something.

Even if I signed…

He would never keep his word.

He would hold the tape over me for the rest of my life.

He would take everything.

And then he would take more.

I put the pen down.

“No.”

Derek’s smile faltered.

“What?”

“I said no.” I stood up straight. “You want to play that tape? Go ahead. Play it for the whole world. Let everyone know what my father did. Let them know what kind of monster he was. But you will never get Lily. And you will never get another dime from me.”

I took my own cassette tape out of my purse.

I held it up.

“You say you have a copy of my father’s confession? Fine. I have a copy too. And if you so much as breathe a word of this to anyone… I go to the police. I tell them everything. My father goes on record for the Callahan fraud. And you go on record for kidnapping, extortion, and blackmail. We all go down together. You. Me. My father. The whole rotten bunch of us.”

I stepped toward him.

“Is that what you want, Derek? Do you want to spend the next twenty years in a cell right next to the man you hate more than anything in the world? Because that’s exactly what will happen. Push me. I dare you.”

We stared at each other.

For a long time.

The machines beeped.

Somewhere down the hall, a nurse laughed.

Derek’s hand curled into a fist.

“You’re bluffing.”

“Try me.”

He studied my face.

And he saw.

I wasn’t bluffing.

I had nothing left to lose.

“Fine,” he spat. “You want a war? You’ve got one. But remember this, Elara… you started it. And when it’s over… you’re going to wish your father had never been born.”

He turned and unlocked the door.

He walked out.

He didn’t look back.

I sank down onto the floor beside the hospital bed.

May you like

And for the first time in my life…

I truly hated my father.
