Chapter 14

“It’s true.”

The words hung in the air between us.

I sank into the chair across from his desk.

“No,” I whispered. “No. You would never—”

“I was thirty years old, Elara. Young. Stupid. Hungry. Thomas and I started the company together. We were best friends. Brothers, almost. But then… the company started making real money. And Thomas changed. He started drinking. He started gambling. He was taking money from the till. Ten thousand here. Twenty thousand there. By the time I found out, he’d stolen over two hundred thousand dollars. Enough to put us under.”

My father picked up the photograph.

“I confronted him. He laughed. Told me there was nothing I could do. He said he’d burn the company to the ground before he let me have it. So I did what I had to do. I went to the police. I showed them the books. Thomas went to prison. I bought his half of the company for pennies on the dollar. And I built Langford Equity from what was left.”

He looked at me.

“I didn’t frame him, Elara. He really did steal the money. But Derek… Derek grew up hearing a different story. His mother told him his father was an innocent man destroyed by a greedy partner. She filled his head with lies. And when Derek found out who you were… he saw his chance for revenge.”

I thought back to the beginning of our relationship.

How Derek had pursued me so relentlessly in college.

How he’d “accidentally” been in every class I took.

How he’d proposed after only six months.

It had never been love.

It had been a plan.

Eight years of my life.

Eight years of lies.

All to avenge a wrong that had never happened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I said. “Why didn’t you warn me who he was when you realized who his father was?”

“Because I didn’t realize until after you were married. The day after the wedding, I had my people run a full background check. When I saw Thomas Callahan’s name… I almost had a heart attack. But by then it was too late. You were in love. You were happy. And I thought… maybe Derek was different from his father. Maybe the cycle would break. I tried to protect you with the trust. I tried to make sure he could never really hurt you financially. But I never imagined he would… do what he did.”

He reached across the desk for my hand.

“I’m sorry, baby. I should have told you. I should have trusted you with the truth. I just… I didn’t want to be the one to destroy your illusions about your marriage.”

I pulled my hand away.

“You should have told me,” I repeated. “I had a right to know that the man I married only wanted me because of something that happened thirty years ago. I had a right to know that every ‘I love you’ was a lie.”

I stood up.

“Did you know he was embezzling from the company? All that money he siphoned off… was he just taking back what he thought was his?”

My father nodded slowly.

“I knew. That’s why I had investigators watching him for six months before that night. I was waiting for him to make a mistake big enough that I could put him away forever without you ever having to know the real reason. But then he beat you. And everything changed.”

I walked to the window.

The gardens of the estate spread out below me—perfectly manicured, expensive, beautiful.

All built on a foundation of pain.

“Does Sarah know?” I said.

“Sarah wrote the trust. She knows the whole story.”

“Does anyone else?”

“Mr. Hale. A few of the old partners. That’s it.”

I turned back to him.

“What else haven’t you told me, Daddy? What other secrets are buried in this family?”

He looked away.

And I knew.

There was more.

So much more.

“Elara—”

“Save it.” I walked to the door. “I need time to think. Don’t call me. Don’t come to the office. I need to figure out what’s real and what’s a lie. And right now… I don’t know if anything you’ve ever told me is the truth.”

I walked out.

I didn’t look back.

As I got in my car, my phone rang.

It was Sarah.

“Elara,” she said, her voice urgent. “We have a problem. A big one. The judge just granted Derek’s request for a new trial. He’s got new evidence. He says he can prove the company is legally his. And his new lawyer… Elara, you’re not going to believe this.”

“Who is it, Sarah?”

May you like

There was a pause.

“His name is Arthur Vane. Marcus Vane’s father. And he’s the man who put Thomas Callahan in prison thirty years ago.”
