Chapter 5

I slept for the next twelve hours.

When I woke up, the sun was streaming through the hospital window, and my mom was sitting in the chair beside the bed, flipping through a legal notepad.

“Morning,” she said, not looking up. “How do you feel?”

“Like I got hit by a truck. But alive.”

“Good. Alive is all that matters.” She tossed the notepad onto the bed. “My lawyer, Martin, is here. He’s in the cafeteria getting coffee. We’ve drawn up the initial divorce papers. Ethan’s lawyer already called—he says Ethan will sign everything without contest. Full custody. The Connecticut house. Fifty percent of all marital assets. Ten thousand a month in child support until both kids are twenty-one.”

I blinked.

“That fast?”

“Ethan is terrified,” she said flatly. “He knows if this goes to trial, Vanessa will drag him down with her. He’s already given the police a full statement—everything she told him, the fake texts, the fake photos, the timeline that doesn’t add up for her pregnancy. He’s cooperating fully. Wants her locked up as bad as we do.”

“Funny how that works,” I said. “He only grows a spine when his own freedom is on the line.”

“Call it what you want. It works in our favor.” She stood. “Martin will be in in five minutes. We’ll go over everything. And then… you have a visitor. Not Ethan. Someone else.”

“Who?”

Before she could answer, the door opened again.

It wasn’t Martin.

It was Vanessa.

She looked different than she had at the villa.

Gone was the soft smile, the flowy dress, the whole “helpless victim” act she’d perfected.

Her hair was pulled back in a tight ponytail.

She wore jeans and a sweatshirt—no makeup.

And her eyes… they were dead.

No emotion at all.

My mom stepped between her and the bed instantly.

“What are you doing here?” she demanded. “Security—”

“Let her speak, Mom.”

My mom looked at me like I’d lost my mind.

“Rachel, she tried to kill you—”

“I know. And I want to hear what she has to say for herself. Before the police take her away and I never get the chance again.”

My mom hesitated, then stepped aside, though she stayed close enough to grab Vanessa if she moved wrong.

Vanessa walked to the foot of the bed.

She didn’t look sorry.

She didn’t look scared.

She looked… bored.

Like this was all a minor inconvenience.

“You think you’ve won,” she said. Her voice was flat. No inflection. Nothing like the breathy, seductive tone she’d used with Ethan. “Ethan’s on your side. The police think I’m a monster. The baby is alive. Everything is perfect for Rachel, right?”

“I’m not here to gloat, Vanessa.”

“Aren’t you?” She tilted her head. “You always were such a good actress. The perfect wife. The perfect mother. Everyone loves Rachel. Poor, sweet Rachel, who never did anything wrong to anyone.”

“I didn’t do anything to you,” I said. “I never even spoke to you before you decided you wanted my husband.”

“Exactly.” Her voice rose for the first time—sharp, jagged around the edges. “You never even looked at me. I worked at that company for two years. Two years! I stayed late. I took work home. I did everything right. And do you know what Ethan said when I finally told him how I felt? He said, ‘You’re wonderful, Vanessa, but I love my wife.’ My wife. Like you were some prize he’d won and I was just the consolation prize.”

She took a step closer.

My mom tensed.

“So I decided to take what should have been mine,” Vanessa said. “I studied you. Everything about you. How you talked. How you dressed. How you laughed at his bad jokes. I became a better version of you. Younger. Prettier. More willing to do the things you’d stopped doing after Liam was born. And it worked. For a while.”

“Until it didn’t.”

“Until you got pregnant again.” She spat the words like they tasted bad. “That was the problem. He was going to leave me. He told me three weeks ago. Said Clara’s birth was his wake-up call. That he was going to tell you everything, beg for your forgiveness, and we’d never see each other again.”

The room went cold.

I’d had no idea.

All this time, I’d thought Ethan was choosing her.

But he’d already decided to come home.

And Vanessa had found out.

“So you decided if you couldn’t have him,” I said slowly, “no one could.”

“Something like that.” She touched her own stomach. “And this baby? It’s not his, like you probably already guessed. It’s my ex-boyfriend’s. I was going to pass it off as Ethan’s. Lock him in forever. But then he was leaving, and I panicked. And I thought… if Rachel was gone… and the baby was gone… Ethan would have nothing left but me. He’d have to stay.”

She said it like it made perfect sense.

Like murdering a pregnant woman and her unborn child was just a reasonable solution to a relationship problem.

“You’re insane,” my mom whispered.

Vanessa’s head snapped toward her.

“Am I? Or am I just the only one willing to do what it takes to get what I want? You think Rachel got everything she has by being nice? She married a millionaire before she was twenty-three. She never had to struggle for anything. While I was working three jobs to pay my rent, she was on vacation in the south of France posting photos of her perfect life. It’s not fair.”

“Life isn’t fair,” I said. “But you don’t get to murder people because you’re jealous.”

The door burst open then.

Two police officers.

Ethan was right behind them, his face white.

“Vanessa,” one of the officers said, stepping forward. “Vanessa Marie Carter, you’re under arrest for attempted murder in the first degree, attempted murder of an unborn child, and aggravated battery. You have the right to remain silent—”

Vanessa didn’t fight.

She didn’t scream.

She just held her hands out for the cuffs.

But before they led her away, she looked back at me.

And she smiled.

A cold, terrible thing that had nothing to do with happiness.

“This isn’t over,” she said. “I have friends. People who owe me favors. You think you’re safe in that big house in Connecticut with your perfect kids and your perfect divorce? Think again, Rachel. I will get out. And when I do… I’m going to take everything you love. Slowly. Starting with that little boy of yours who saw too much.”

The officers pulled her out.

May you like

The door slammed.

And suddenly, I couldn’t breathe.
