Chapter 1
"My husband’s mistress shoved me down the staircase while our son watched from the upstairs railing. She was still pretending to save me when he stepped out and said, “I saw everything.”
I was eight months pregnant when Vanessa asked me to meet her at the villa in Miami.
She said she wanted to “end the drama.”
I should have known better.
The house was too quiet.
No music.
No staff.
Just Vanessa standing at the top of the staircase with a soft smile I had learned to fear.
“You really think Ethan will leave me?” she asked.
“He’s my husband,” I said.
She stepped closer.
“And I’m carrying his child.”
Her smile vanished.
“You always win by crying first.”
I turned to walk away.
That was when both her hands slammed into my back.
My foot missed the first step.
Then everything became wood, pain, and terror.
I hit the landing hard and wrapped both arms around my stomach.
“Help,” I whispered.
“My baby…”
Vanessa stared down at me for one frozen second.
Then she rushed halfway down the stairs.
I heard the front door open.
“Rachel?” Ethan shouted.
Vanessa dropped beside me so fast it almost looked real.
“Oh my God!” she cried. “She slipped!”
Ethan came running into the foyer and nearly fell to his knees beside me.
“Rachel, stay with me.”
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“I tried to catch her, Ethan. She just lost her balance.”
I tried to speak, but the pain crushed the words inside my throat.
Then I looked up.
A small shadow was clinging to the upstairs railing.
My son Liam.
His eyes were wide with fear.
Vanessa followed my gaze and went still.
Ethan saw him too.
“Liam?” he called. “What are you doing up there?”
Liam slowly stepped out from behind the banister.
His voice shook, but he didn’t look away from Vanessa.
“I saw everything.”
The room went silent.
Vanessa stood up too quickly.
“Sweetheart, you’re confused.”
Ethan rose and turned toward our son.
His face changed when he saw how badly Liam was trembling.
