Chapter 9

The next three days were a blur of activity.

Claire threw herself into learning everything she could about the current state of ColeMed. She met with department heads, reviewed product pipelines, studied financial reports. The more she learned, the more she realized how close the company was to collapse.

Ethan had been running it like his personal piggy bank.

R&D was underfunded. Sales targets were unrealistic. Employee morale was at an all-time low. The MedAxis deal that Ethan had been so proud of was falling apart because he had overpromised and underdelivered.

But Claire also saw potential.

The core technology was still strong. The employees—those who remained—were talented and dedicated. With the right leadership, with her father's investment, ColeMed could not only be saved—it could become the company she and Ethan had once dreamed of building.

If Ethan didn't destroy it first.

He was making good on his threat.

He had filed a countersuit, claiming that Claire and her father had conspired to defraud him out of his company. He was giving interviews to anyone who would listen, painting himself as the victim of a ruthless father-daughter team.

And the worst part?

Some people believed him.

The court of public opinion was split. There were those who saw Ethan for what he was—a greedy, entitled man who had betrayed his wife. But there were also those who bought his narrative: the self-made entrepreneur brought down by a wealthy family with deep pockets and no conscience.

Claire tried to ignore it. She focused on the work, on saving the company, on building something new from the ashes of her marriage.

But it was hard.

Everywhere she went, she felt eyes on her. Every time she checked her phone, there were more hateful messages, more cruel comments, more lies.

It was Vanessa who delivered the final blow.

On Thursday afternoon, Claire received an email from an unknown sender.

The subject line was simple: You should know.

She opened it.

And inside were photos.

Dozens of them.

Photos of Ethan and Vanessa together. In restaurants. In hotel rooms. In the very house Claire had shared with Ethan.

The earliest photo was dated two years ago.

Two years.

He had been cheating on her for two years.

Claire stared at the photos, her mind reeling. She thought of all the nights Ethan had said he was working late, all the business trips, all the times he had been distant and preoccupied.

She hadn't just lost her husband in one night at a gala.

She had lost him slowly, over the course of two years, while he was lying to her face every single day.

And Vanessa had sent the photos.

Why?

Claire didn't have to wonder for long.

Her phone rang.

Vanessa's name appeared on the screen.

Claire answered, her voice cold.

"What do you want?"

"Did you get my gift?" Vanessa's voice was smooth, self-satisfied.

"Why are you doing this?"

"Because you need to understand something, Claire. He was mine long before that gala. I was the one who was with him when he was stressed about the company. I was the one who listened to his dreams. I was the one who really understood him."

She paused, her voice dropping.

"You were just the wife. The placeholder. The one he had to come home to. But I was the one he really wanted."

Claire felt a strange sense of calm wash over her.

The anger, the hurt, the betrayal—all of it suddenly felt distant, unimportant. Because she realized, in that moment, that she didn't want Ethan anymore. She didn't want the life they had built together. She didn't want anything to do with the man who had lied to her for two years.

She was free.

"Thank you, Vanessa," she said quietly.

There was a pause on the other end of the line.

"Thank me?"

"For showing me the truth. For making me realize how lucky I am to be rid of him."

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"You think this is over? Ethan will never let you take his company. He'll fight you until the day he dies."

"Let him." Claire's voice was steady. "I have something he'll never have."

"What's that?"

"Integrity."

She hung up.

And for the first time since this nightmare began, Claire smiled.

The call with Vanessa had clarified everything.

She called Margaret immediately.

"We're done negotiating," she said. "We go public with everything. The embezzlement, the affair, all of it. Ethan made his choice. Now he has to live with the consequences."

Margaret didn't argue.

"I'll have the press release ready by morning."

The story broke at dawn.

*"COLEMED CEO ETHAN COLE ACCUSED OF EMBEZZLEMENT, FRAUD, AND A TWO-YEAR AFFAIR WITH TOP EXECUTIVE"*

This time, the narrative shifted.

The photos Vanessa had sent—Claire included them, with the explanation that they had been sent to her by Ethan's mistress—convinced even Ethan's most ardent supporters. The financial records Margaret's team had uncovered were damning. The timeline of the affair, overlapping with Ethan's most aggressive expansion efforts, painted a picture of a man completely corrupted by power and greed.

By noon, the board of directors had voted unanimously to remove Ethan as CEO.

By mid-afternoon, the SEC had launched an investigation.

By evening, Vanessa Hale had been fired and was reportedly cooperating with authorities.

Claire was named interim CEO of ColeMed.

She stood in the lobby of the company's headquarters, looking up at the logo she had helped design all those years ago, and felt a strange mix of emotions. Grief for the marriage that was gone. Relief that the truth was finally out. Fear about the future.

But most of all, she felt hope.

Her father came up beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder.

"Are you ready?"

Claire took a deep breath.

"Ready as I'll ever be."

Together, they walked through the doors and into the building.

The employees were gathered in the main atrium, waiting. They looked nervous, uncertain, their jobs hanging in the balance.

Claire stepped onto the small stage that had been set up, turned to face them, and began to speak.

She told them the truth. About the early days. About the dream she and Ethan had shared. About how that dream had been corrupted. She told them about the financial state of the company, about the challenges ahead, about the hard work that would be required.

And then she told them about her father's investment.

About the plan to rebuild.

About the future they could build together, if they were willing to fight for it.

When she finished speaking, there was a moment of silence.

Then someone started clapping.

Another joined in.

Soon, the entire room was applauding.

Claire looked out at the faces of the people who worked for her—people who were counting on her—and she knew she had made the right choice.

She would rebuild ColeMed.

Not as Ethan's wife.

May you like

Not as William Bennett's daughter.

But as Claire.
