Chapter 10

Six months later.
The morning sun streamed through the windows of Claire's new office—the corner office, once Ethan's, now hers—and she smiled.
ColeMed was thriving.
The MedAxis deal had been renegotiated and closed, thanks to Claire's personal relationship with Dr. Whitmore and her father's backing. The company's flagship product had received FDA approval ahead of schedule. Employee morale was higher than it had been in years.
And Claire?
She was thriving too.
She had lost twenty pounds, not from stress, but from the regular yoga classes she had started taking. She had reconnected with old friends she had neglected during her marriage. She had even gone on a few dates—nothing serious, just fun, just reminding herself that she was still young and alive.
The divorce had been finalized two months earlier.
It had been messy, as these things always are. Ethan had fought until the very end, but the evidence against him had been overwhelming. He had been forced to accept a settlement that left him with a fraction of what he had once had, and the SEC investigation was still ongoing.
Claire hadn't spoken to him since the day he was removed from the company.
She didn't want to.
She was too busy building her new life.
A soft knock on the door announced her father's arrival. He entered carrying two cups of coffee, looking pleased with himself.
"Good morning, pumpkin."
"Morning, Dad." Claire accepted the coffee he offered her. "What brings you by so early?"
"Can't a father come visit his daughter at work?" He sat down across from her, his expression turning more serious. "Actually, I came to talk to you about the gala next week."
Claire groaned playfully.
"The Cedars-Sinai benefit. I almost forgot."
"How could you forget? You're the keynote speaker this year."
"That's what I'm afraid of."
Her father laughed.
"You'll be brilliant. And besides, it's a full-circle moment. Remember the first time we went to that benefit together? You were so nervous you spilled champagne on the mayor."
"I was twenty-two!" Claire protested, laughing. "And in my defense, he stepped on my dress."
She grew quiet, thinking about that night. Thinking about the young woman she had been, full of dreams and ambition, before she had met Ethan and put her own life on hold.
She was that woman again now.
But wiser. Stronger.
"Claire?" Her father's voice pulled her back to the present. "There's something else I wanted to talk to you about."
"What's that?"
He hesitated, which was unusual for him.
"I've been thinking. About stepping back from Bennett Capital. Not retiring, exactly, but... taking more of a behind-the-scenes role. And I was wondering if you'd consider taking over as CEO."
Claire stared at him, stunned.
"Me? Run Bennett Capital?"
"Why not?" He shrugged, trying to appear casual, though she could see how much this meant to him. "You've proven you can run a company. You've got the mind for it, the heart for it. And frankly, I'd like to work with my daughter again. Properly this time."
Claire's mind raced.
Run Bennett Capital? One of the most successful investment firms in the world?
It was an opportunity most people would kill for.
But...
She looked around her office. At the team she had built. At the company she had saved. At the work that was just beginning.
"Dad..." she said slowly. "I'm honored. Truly. But... I can't leave ColeMed. Not now. We're just getting started. There's so much I still want to do here."
Her father's face fell, but he nodded slowly.
"I understand. This is your company. You built it. It would be wrong to ask you to walk away."
"But..." Claire smiled. "What if we did both?"
He looked up, curious.
"Both?"
"What if I stayed on as CEO of ColeMed, but joined Bennett Capital as a partner? I could help oversee the healthcare investments, use my experience to guide the portfolio. And over time, maybe I could take on more responsibility. Learn the business from the ground up, the way you did."
Her father's face broke into a grin.
"That sounds perfect."
He stood up and walked around the desk to hug her.
"I'm so proud of you, Claire. You've turned something terrible into something beautiful. Your mother would be proud too."
Claire's throat tightened. She had thought about her mother often over the past six months, wondering what she would have said, what advice she would have given. She liked to think her mother would have been proud of the woman she had become.
Her father pulled back, checking his watch.
"I should let you get to work. I know you have a full day."
He walked to the door, then paused.
"Oh, and Claire? About the gala next week... do you have a date?"
Claire laughed.
"Dad, are you trying to set me up?"
"Never." He held up his hands in mock surrender. "But if you don't have anyone... I'd be honored to escort you."
Claire's heart warmed.
"I'd like that."
He left, and Claire turned back to her desk, her mind already moving to the day's tasks. She had a product launch to oversee, a meeting with the engineering team, a call with potential partners in Europe.
Her life was full.
Full of work, full of purpose, full of possibility.
She thought about the night of the gala, six months earlier. The night Ethan had told her she didn't represent his success anymore. The night she had walked into that ballroom on her father's arm and changed everything.
Ethan had been wrong.
She hadn't represented his success.
She represented her own.
And the best part?
May you like
Her story was just beginning.
