Chapter 9

I fell asleep in the chair next to Rosie’s bed.

I woke up to screaming.

It was loud. Angry. Male.

I jumped out of the chair. My heart was hammering.

I ran out into the hallway.

Jake Hale was there.

He’d pushed past a nurse at the front desk. His shirt was unbuttoned. He was swaying a little, drunk.

“Where are they?” he yelled. “Where are my kids?”

Ben was between him and the NICU. His fists were up. His face was red.

“Get the hell out of here,” Ben yelled. “Before I kill you.”

Hale laughed.

“They’re mine,” he said. “I got a right to see ’em. You’re just the sucker who married their momma.”

He lunged.

Ben hit him first.

It was a hard right cross to the jaw. Hale stumbled back. He tripped over a water fountain and hit the floor.

He scrambled back up. He pulled a switchblade out of his pocket.

The few people in the waiting room screamed.

“Call security!” I yelled at the nurse. She was already on the phone.

Hale swung the knife at Ben. Ben ducked. The blade sliced through the air an inch from his face.

My parents ran down the hall. Mom screamed when she saw Hale. Dad froze.

Hale turned to them.

“You!” he yelled. He pointed the knife at Dad. “You said if I left, I’d never have to see you again! But money runs out, old man. I want more. Another 100 grand. Or I go to the press. I tell everyone everything.”

Security ran through the double doors. Two big guys in black uniforms. They grabbed Hale from behind. He fought, swinging the knife, yelling so loud the walls shook.

“You think anyone’s gonna care about your perfect little Down syndrome sister when they find out your drunk driving almost killed her?” he screamed at me. “When they find out you paid me to rape her and knock her up and keep quiet? The whole town’s gonna know what a bunch of lying freaks you are!”

The whole waiting room went silent.

Everyone was staring.

The old lady from down the street. The dad with the broken arm. The med students on their break.

They all heard.

Every word.

The cops showed up 10 minutes later.

They took Hale away in cuffs. He was still yelling as they dragged him out.

A detective pulled us all into a small private room.

We told her everything.

The crash.

The amnesia.

The assault.

The hush money.

Ben’s fake marriage.

All of it.

She took notes. She didn’t judge. She just listened.

When we were done, she closed her notebook.

“Hale is going away for a long time,” she said. “For the assault, for the knife, for extortion. The rest… we’ll sort it out. But you did the right thing, telling the truth.”

I walked out of the room.

Ben was leaning against the wall. He had a cut on his cheek, already turning purple.

He looked at me.

“Now what?” he said.

May you like

I looked down the hall, toward Rosie’s room.

“Now,” I said. “We figure out how to be a real family. No more lies.”
