Chapter 6

Ben didn’t look up.
His voice was muffled against his knees.
“Two years before I proposed,” he said. “Rosie came home from the day program crying. She wouldn’t tell your parents what was wrong. But she told me. We’ve always told each other everything, you know?”
He stopped. Swallowed hard.
“There was a new aide there. Jake Hale. He was 22. He took her into the supply closet one afternoon. He touched her. He told her if she told anyone, she’d be bad, and no one would love her anymore.”
I felt the blood drain from my face.
No.
Not Rosie.
Not my sweet sister, who still believed in Santa Claus and cried when she saw stray dogs on the side of the road.
“I wanted to kill him,” Ben said. His voice shook. “I went straight to your dad. We went to the program. We got Hale fired that day. But then your parents… they said we couldn’t call the police.”
“Why?” I screamed. The sound echoed off the cinder block walls. “Why the hell would they not call the police?”
“Because they were scared,” Ben said. “Scared the whole town would find out. Scared people would treat Rosie even worse. Scared the defense lawyers would get in court and say she consented, that she didn’t know what she was doing. They said it would ruin her. Ruin all of us. So they paid him.”
I froze.
“They paid him $50,000,” Ben went on. “From your college fund. They made him sign a paper saying he’d leave the state and never come back. Two months later, Rosie missed her period. She was pregnant.”
I slid down the wall until I was sitting on the floor across from him.
“So you married her,” I said. It wasn’t a question.
“Your parents begged me,” Ben said. “They said it was the only way. That if anyone found out the babies were Hale’s, Rosie would be shamed forever. That the kids would be teased their whole lives. They said if I married her, everyone would think the twins were mine. We could all just… start over. Be a family.”
He looked up at me. His face was streaked with tears.
“I said no at first. I hated it. I hated that that piece of garbage got to walk away free. I hated lying to everyone. But then I saw Rosie. She was holding the positive pregnancy test, and she was so happy she was bouncing up and down. She kept saying ‘Ben, we’re gonna be mom and dad. Just like we promised.’ And I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t break her heart. So I said yes.”
I put my head in my hands.
All the pieces fit.
The sudden proposal. The way Ben never posted wedding photos that showed him smiling. The way he slept in the guest room half the time, saying he didn’t want to disturb Rosie’s sleep.
It was never about guilt over the crash.
It was about this.
A monster had hurt my sister.
My parents had paid him to run.
My best friend had married her to cover it up.
And I’d had no idea.
None.
I stood up. My legs were wobbly.
“Where is he now?” I said.
Ben blinked.
May you like
“Who?”
“Hale,” I said. “Where is Jake Hale right now?”
