Chapter 7

I woke up to the sound of Lily laughing.

Sunlight streamed through the bedroom window, warm and golden. I sat up, rubbing my eyes. For a moment, I forgot where I was. For a moment, everything felt normal.

Then the memories came flooding back.

Derek. The plan. The life insurance. Henderson.

I got out of bed and walked out into the living room. Lily was sitting on the floor by the fireplace, playing with a set of wooden blocks Marcus had found for her. Marcus sat beside her, helping her build a tower. Jake sat at the dining table, talking on the phone in a low voice.

"Morning," Marcus said, smiling at me.

"Morning," I said.

Jake hung up the phone and turned to me. His face was serious.

"That was the state police," he said. "They're sending a team. They'll be here in about two hours. They want to take your statements, review the evidence, and put a protection detail on you and Lily."

I nodded. It was really happening.

"Did they say anything about Derek?" I asked.

"He checked out of his hotel in Chicago early this morning," Jake said. "He's on a flight back. He should be home by noon."

My stomach tightened. "He's coming here?"

"He doesn't know where here is," Jake said. "But he knows you ran. And he knows someone helped you. He'll be looking for you. And for Marcus."

Marcus's jaw clenched. "Let him come."

Jake shook his head. "No. We do this the right way. The police will handle Derek. You two stay here, stay safe, and let the system work."

Two hours later, the state police arrived.

There were four of them—two detectives, two uniformed officers. They were professional, serious, nothing like the local police Derek knew.

Detective Carter—no relation, he assured me with a small smile—led the interview. He sat with me in the living room while the other officers reviewed the evidence at the dining table.

I told him everything.

I told him about Lily overhearing the phone call. About Marcus warning us. About the escape. About the drive back to the house. About Henderson. About the life insurance policies, the gambling debts, the email.

I showed him the picture I'd taken of Derek's itinerary. I gave him the burner phone Jake had given me. I told him everything I could remember, every detail, every word.

It took nearly three hours.

When I was done, Detective Carter sat back in his chair.

"Mrs. Carter," he said. "You and your daughter have been through an unimaginable ordeal. But the evidence you've provided is substantial. We have enough to arrest your husband on conspiracy to commit murder charges. As soon as he lands, we'll be waiting for him."

Relief washed over me, so strong I felt dizzy.

"Thank you," I whispered.

Detective Carter nodded. "We're also going to arrest Mr. Henderson. We have officers on their way to his last known location. And we'll be looking into Mr. Rizzo and his organization as well."

He paused.

"I'm not going to lie to you. This will be a long process. There will be hearings, trials, a lot of difficult days ahead. But you and your daughter are safe now. We're assigning two officers to stay here with you until we're confident the threat has passed. And we'll help you find a more permanent place to stay, if you want."

I looked over at Lily, who was sitting at the kitchen table, coloring while one of the uniformed officers watched her, smiling.

"I want to go home," I said quietly. "Not that house. But... I want our life back. I want Lily to feel safe again."

"You will," Detective Carter said. "I promise you."

By late afternoon, the news came.

Derek had been arrested at the airport.

Henderson had been arrested at his apartment.

They were both in custody, being held without bail.

Jake got the call from one of his contacts and told us immediately.

Marcus let out a breath and leaned back in his chair, closing his eyes.

Lily, sensing the change in mood, looked up from her coloring. "What happened, Mommy?"

I walked over to her and knelt down, pulling her into my arms.

"The bad men are gone, baby," I said, tears streaming down my face. "We're safe now."

Lily hugged me back, tight. "I knew we would be, Mommy. I knew Marcus would save us."

That evening, after the police had left—leaving two officers stationed outside the cabin—we sat together by the fireplace. Jake had decided to stay for a few more days, just to be sure everything was secure.

We ate a simple dinner of pasta and salad. Lily chattered happily, telling us about the tower she'd built with Marcus, about the birds she'd seen outside, about how she wanted to learn to fish in the stream behind the cabin.

For the first time in a long time, I felt like I could breathe.

After dinner, Jake pulled me aside.

"I have something else to tell you," he said quietly. "When I was going through Derek's files, I found something. Bank accounts. Hidden accounts, in his name only. Total of about four hundred thousand dollars."

I stared at him. "What?"

"He's been siphoning money from your joint accounts for years," Jake said. "Small amounts, so you wouldn't notice. But it adds up. Four hundred thousand dollars, Elena. And it's yours. Well, half of it is, anyway. It's marital property. And with what Derek's done, the courts will almost certainly award you all of it."

Four hundred thousand dollars.

I'd spent the last seven years worrying about money, feeling guilty for every dollar I spent, thinking we were barely making ends meet. And all along, Derek had been hiding a fortune.

"I don't care about the money," I said.

"I know," Jake said. "But it'll help. You can buy a new house, start over. Give Lily the life she deserves."

I looked over at Marcus, who was sitting on the floor with Lily, helping her stack blocks.

"Thank you," I said to Jake. "For everything."

Jake nodded. "It was my job. And for what it's worth... you're a strong woman, Elena. You and your daughter are going to be okay."

That night, I slept better than I had in years.

Lily was safe. Derek was in jail. The nightmare was over.

But I should have known better.

May you like

Because Derek was not a man who went quietly.

And the worst was yet to come.
