Chapter 1

I was seven months pregnant when my mother-in-law started calling me “fragile” in front of the entire family. I thought she was just overprotective. Then I found the hidden camera in the nursery… and heard her voice planning to take my baby the moment he was born.
My husband, Ethan, kept telling me not to take his mother seriously.
“Mom worries about everything,” he said. “That’s just how she is.”
But Diane’s “worry” started controlling my life.
At Sunday dinner in our Dallas home, she took a plate from my hands.
“Emily shouldn’t be carrying anything,” she announced.
Everyone laughed awkwardly.
Then she added, “Some women simply aren’t built for motherhood.”
I looked at Ethan.
He stared at his food.
Two days later, Diane showed up at our house without calling.
She walked straight into the nursery and started rearranging everything I had prepared.
“The baby needs stability,” she said.
“He has stability,” I replied. “He has me and Ethan.”
Diane smiled.
“We’ll see.”
That night, I noticed a tiny blinking light behind a stuffed animal on the nursery shelf.
I pulled it down and found a small camera taped behind it.
My hands started shaking.
“Ethan!”
He came running upstairs.
The second he saw the camera, his face changed.
“You knew about this?”
“No.”
But he answered too quickly.
I removed the memory card before he could touch it.
At midnight, while Ethan slept, I opened the recordings on my laptop.
Most were videos of me folding baby clothes or sitting alone in the nursery.
Then I found one recorded three days earlier.
Diane was standing beside the crib.
Someone else was with her, just outside the camera frame.
Diane whispered, “Once the baby is born, we document everything.”
The other person asked, “And if Emily refuses?”
“She won’t have a choice.”
My stomach tightened.
Then Diane said, “Ethan already signed what we need.”
I stopped breathing.
The person beside her finally stepped into view.
It was my husband.
I covered my mouth as Ethan’s recorded voice said, “Just make sure she never finds out before the delivery.”
Behind me, our bedroom door creaked open.
I turned around.

Ethan was standing there, staring at the laptop.
And the first thing he said was, “Emily, give me the memory card.”
