Chapter 4

Margaret spent the next 48 hours putting every piece of her plan in place.

She told Ethan she had found a private lender who would give her the $20,000, but the lender required a meeting at her lawyer’s office to sign paperwork and confirm Ethan’s medical status. She said the lender wanted to make sure the money was actually going toward treatment, not anything else.

Ethan jumped at the chance.

“Of course, Mom,” he said, his voice oozing fake gratitude. “I’ll be there. Dr. Hale will come too, to explain my condition. Thank you. You’re saving my life.”

Margaret hung up, her jaw tight.

On the day of the meeting, she arrived at Mr. Torres’ office an hour early. Jake was there, along with a uniformed police officer named Officer Reed, who waited in an adjacent room. They had set up cameras and microphones to record every second of the meeting.

“Are you ready for this?” Mr. Torres asked, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.

Margaret nodded.

“I’ve been ready since the day I heard him laugh about using me like an ATM,” she said.

Ten minutes later, Ethan walked in, leaning heavily on a cane he did not need, his face pale with makeup to make him look sick. Dr. Hale followed behind him, carrying a thick folder of forged medical records. Chloe brought up the rear, wearing a modest dress and a concerned expression, like she was a devoted girlfriend worried about her sick partner.

Ethan’s face lit up when he saw Margaret.

“Mom,” he said, moving to hug her.

Margaret stepped back.

Ethan froze, his smile faltering.

“Mom? What’s wrong?”

“Take a seat,” Margaret said, nodding to the chairs across the desk.

Ethan exchanged a confused look with Dr. Hale and Chloe, then sat down. Dr. Hale placed his fake folder on the desk.

“Mrs. Collins,” Dr. Hale said, putting on his most professional tone. “I understand you have some questions about Ethan’s condition before you sign the loan papers. I can assure you, his situation is very serious—”

“Cut the crap,” Margaret said.

The room went silent.

Chloe’s eyes widened. Dr. Hale’s jaw tightened. Ethan stared at Margaret, like he could not believe what he was hearing.

“Mom, what are you—”

“I know you’re not sick,” Margaret said, her voice clear and steady. “I know you’ve been faking this for over a year. I know you stole my identity, took out $82,000 in loans in my name, scammed our family out of another $40,000, and spent every cent on cars, trips, and a house in Scottsdale with this woman.”

She nodded at Chloe, whose face went white.

Ethan laughed, a sharp, nervous sound.

“Mom, this is crazy. Who told you this? Laura? She’s a liar, she’s bitter because I left her—”

Margaret held up her phone and pressed play.

The sound of Dr. Hale’s voice filled the room, from the recording she had made when he caught her snooping at the hospital: “If you know what’s good for you, you’ll keep your mouth shut, Mrs. Collins. You don’t want to make an enemy of me. I can make sure your son’s condition gets much worse, and no one will ever be able to prove it was me.”

Dr. Hale’s face drained of color.

Margaret next tossed the stack of forged emails, bank records, and secret Instagram photos onto the desk.

“I have proof of every single lie,” she said. “The identity theft, the fraud, the exploitation. All of it.”

Ethan stared at the papers, his fake sick act vanishing. His face twisted into something ugly, something cruel.

“So what?” he said, leaning forward, his voice hard. “You’re my mother. You owed me this. You were always too busy working, too strict with money when I was a kid. You never let me have anything I wanted. I was just taking what I deserved.”

Margaret felt her heart crack, but she did not look away.

“You deserved nothing of this,” she said. “I gave you everything. I gave up my life for you. And you threw it all away for a sports car and a woman who doesn’t even love you.”

Chloe stood up, her hands shaking.

“I didn’t do anything,” she said. “This was all his idea. He made me go along with it—”

“Save it,” Jake said, stepping into the room. Officer Reed followed behind him, holding a pair of handcuffs.

“Ethan Collins, Dr. Robert Hale,” Officer Reed said, “you’re under arrest for fraud, identity theft, and financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult. Chloe Martinez, you’re under arrest for conspiracy to commit fraud. You have the right to remain silent…”

Ethan’s eyes went wide as Officer Reed cuffed him. He looked at Margaret, screaming.

“Mom! Tell them to stop! You can’t do this to me! I’m your son!”

Margaret watched as they led him out, his shouts echoing down the hallway.

She did not move.

She did not cry.

She just sat there, finally free.
