Chapter 1

I walked into the hospital alone to give birth.

Just a small suitcase, a worn sweater, and nine months of secrets I carried like stones in my pockets.

Mercy Creek Medical smelled like antiseptic and fear.

The reception nurse looked up with a gentle smile. "Is your husband on the way?"

I returned a faint one. "Yes… he should be here soon."

It wasn't true.

Logan Wright had left seven months earlier, the night I told him I was pregnant.

No shouting. No argument. Just a bag packed, a quiet excuse about needing air, and a door closing behind him with a softness that hurt more than anger ever could.

I cried for weeks.

Then I stopped.

Not because the pain was gone.

But because there was nowhere left to put it.

I rented a small room above a laundromat. Worked double shifts at the diner on Main Street. Saved every dollar I could.

Each night, I rested my hands over my stomach and whispered to the child I hadn't met yet.

"I'm here. I'm not going anywhere."

Labor came early.

Twelve hours of waves that crashed through me, leaving me breathless and shaking. I gripped the bed rails until my knuckles turned white. Nurses spoke in calm voices, guiding me through each contraction.

"Please… let him be okay," I kept whispering.

At 3:17 in the afternoon, my baby was born.

A cry filled the room.

Sharp. Strong. Alive.

I sank back against the pillow, tears streaming down my face. But this time, they weren't from heartbreak.

They were from relief.

From love so fierce it scared me.

"Is he okay?" I asked softly.

The nurse smiled as she carefully wrapped him in a warm blanket. "He's perfect."

She turned toward me, ready to place him in my arms.

That's when the doctor entered.

Dr. Robert Wright.

I'd heard the nurses whisper about him. Steady hands. Calm demeanor. Never lost his composure.

He glanced at the chart in his hand.

Then at the baby.

And froze.

The color drained from his face.

His hand trembled so hard the chart slipped slightly in his grip.

And then, without saying a word, his eyes filled with tears.

Not just moisture.

Full, heavy tears that spilled down his cheeks.

The moment he saw my child, something from his past came rushing back.

I didn't know it then.

But what happened in the next few minutes would change three lives forever.
