Chapter 8

Emily’s blood ran cold.

Ryan.

Of course he was here.

He’d been working with Elias this whole time.

From the airport to the photo to the five million dollar transfer.

It had all been planned.

“Let her go, Elias,” Noah said, his voice steady, even though his hands were shaking. “Let Ava go. You can have the shares. I’ll sign them. Right now. Just let her go.”

Elias laughed.

“You think I’m stupid? I let her go, you kill me. No. We’re all leaving together. You’re going to sign the shares over on the way to the airport. Then I’m going to disappear. And when I’m safe in another country? I’ll send you Ava’s head in a box. Along with Emily’s and the baby’s.”

He tightened his grip on the gun, pressing it harder into Ava’s temple.

Ava whimpered.

Noah’s eyes darted to the window behind Elias.

It was open.

A fire escape ran down the side of the building.

Noah nodded almost imperceptibly at Tom, who was standing to Elias’s left.

Tom understood.

Slowly, silently, he shifted his weight, moving closer to the window.

“Elias,” Noah said, raising his voice to distract him. “You really think Dad didn’t know you weren’t his? He told me years ago. He loved you anyway. He raised you as his own. He left you ten million dollars in his will. A seat on the board. Everything you ever wanted—except the CEO spot. Because he knew you were too angry. Too cruel. He didn’t want you to ruin the company he built.”

Elias’s face twisted with rage.

“Liar! He hated me! He always loved you more—”

It was the distraction they needed.

Tom moved fast.

He fired a stun gun shot right at Elias’s chest.

Elias convulsed, dropping the gun, collapsing to the floor.

The two men holding Ryan fired—but Tom’s team was faster.

Two shots.

Both men went down, hit in the shoulder, non-lethal.

Ryan tried to run for the door—but Emily stepped in front of him, slamming a metal pipe she’d grabbed from the corner into his stomach as hard as she could.

Ryan doubled over, gasping.

Noah ran to Ava, cutting her bonds, pulling the gag from her mouth.

“Ava? Are you okay? Can you hear me?”

Ava nodded, crying, throwing her arms around his neck.

“I knew you’d come,” she whispered. “I knew you wouldn’t let him kill me.”

The police arrived ten minutes later.

Elias was arrested for kidnapping, assault, fraud, and attempted murder.

Ryan was arrested for conspiracy, assault, and violating the temporary restraining order Noah had gotten him the week before.

It was over.

Or so they thought.

They were at the police station until three a.m., giving statements.

When they got back to the penthouse, they found Victoria waiting for them.

She stood when they walked in, her face pale, her eyes red from crying.

She walked straight to Ava, pulling her into a hug.

“I’m so sorry, baby,” she whispered. “I should have believed you when you said Elias was dangerous. I should have protected you.”

She turned to Noah, then to Emily.

“I was wrong,” she said, her voice thick. “About everything. About Emily. About you, Noah. You were right to fight for them. Elias... I never knew he was capable of this. I thought he was just angry. I thought it was my fault, for the affair. For lying to him all these years.”

She reached out, taking Emily’s hand.

“Can you ever forgive me? For the things I said?”

Emily nodded, squeezing her hand.

“Of course. You were scared. We all were.”

The next two weeks were a blur.

Elias was denied bail, held without bond pending trial.

Ryan pled guilty to all charges, getting five years in prison in exchange for testifying against Elias.

The board voted unanimously to keep Noah as CEO, giving him a raise and a new five-year contract.

The custody case was closed—Emily was awarded full, permanent custody of Lily, with Ryan having no visitation rights, ever.

Everything was perfect.

But Emily couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.

That it was too easy.

That Elias wouldn’t go down without one last fight.

She was right.

Two weeks later, on the morning of Noah’s birthday, the police called.

Elias had escaped from jail.

He’d bribed two guards, climbed through a vent in his cell, and disappeared into the night.

And he’d left a note.

Taped to the wall of his cell.

May you like

It said:

**I’m coming for what’s mine. And this time, I’m not leaving any witnesses.**
