Chapter 5

The world exploded.

Within an hour, the photo was everywhere.

Every news channel, every website, every social media feed.

People were calling Emily a gold digger, a con artist, a liar who’d tricked a poor, lonely billionaire into saving her.

They called Noah a fool, a weakling who’d let a stranger manipulate him out of his company.

The Whitman Group stock dropped twelve percent in two hours.

The board called another emergency meeting—this time, for eight a.m. the next day. No postponements.

Noah paced the living room all night, on the phone with Marcus, with his CFO, with his head of security.

Emily sat on the couch, holding Lily, reading the comments on the news articles, each one a knife to the chest.

*She should be in jail.*

*Take the baby away from her. She’s unfit.*

*Noah is so stupid. Elias should run the company.*

Ryan called her at three a.m.

She didn’t recognize the number, but she answered anyway, slipping into the hallway so she wouldn’t wake Lily.

“Told you I’d win,” Ryan said, his voice smug. “Elias sent me the photo. Paid the guy across the aisle five grand to take it. Tomorrow, I’m filing for full custody. The judge will see you’re a liar who uses her baby to trick rich men. You’ll never see Lily again.”

He hung up.

Emily slid down the wall, sobbing into her hand, trying not to make a sound.

She’d been so stupid.

So stupid to think a lie could fix everything.

Now she was going to lose Lily.

And Noah was going to lose everything he’d ever worked for.

All because of her.

Noah found her there ten minutes later.

He knelt in front of her, pulling her into his arms, letting her cry into his chest.

“I heard the call,” he said quietly. “Ryan’s not going to take Lily. I won’t let him.”

Emily pulled away, wiping her eyes.

“Yes he will. And you’re going to lose Whitman Group. It’s over, Noah. We lost. I should leave. Now. Before I make it worse.”

She stood, heading for the guest room to pack.

Noah grabbed her arm, stopping her.

“No. We don’t run. Not this time.”

“What else can we do? The whole world knows we lied. The board will fire you. Ryan will take Lily. There’s nothing left—”

“There is one thing.” Noah’s voice was hard, determined. “Marcus has a friend at the Tribune. He’s going to run a story tomorrow morning. About Ryan. All the proof we have—texts where he threatened you, bank records showing he froze your accounts, the police report from Austin when he hit you last year. Everything.”

He paused.

“And I’m going to tell the truth. All of it. At the board meeting tomorrow.”

Emily stared at him.

“The truth? They’ll fire you for sure.”

“Maybe. But if I tell the truth—if I tell them I met you on a plane, that I saw a woman in trouble and I helped her because it was the right thing to do—maybe they’ll respect that. Maybe they’ll see Elias is the real liar. The one who paid a passenger to take a photo, who’s been working with Ryan to destroy us both.”

He stepped closer, taking her hands in his.

“And for Ryan? If the Tribune runs that story tomorrow? No judge in Illinois will give custody to a man who beats his wife and teams up with a corrupt billionaire to frame an innocent woman. He’ll lose. We’ll both win. But only if we do it together.”

Emily looked into his eyes.

She saw fear, yes—but also hope.

And something else.

Something she hadn’t let herself feel in a long time.

Trust.

“Okay,” she said. “We do it together.”

The next morning was chaos.

The Tribune story hit the stands at six a.m.

**RYAN COLLINS: THE ABUSIVE EX BEHIND THE WHITMAN SCANDAL.**

It was all there: the texts, the bank records, the police report, statements from Emily’s old neighbors who’d heard Ryan screaming at her night after night.

By seven a.m., the tide had turned.

People were calling Ryan a monster.

Calling Emily brave.

Calling Noah a good man who’d tried to do the right thing.

But the board didn’t care about public opinion.

They cared about money.

And the stock was still falling.

Noah left for the meeting at seven thirty, kissing Lily on the forehead before he went.

“Wait for me here,” he said to Emily. “Whatever happens, I’ll come back for you.”

Emily waited.

And waited.

Three hours.

Four hours.

She paced the penthouse, checking her phone every two seconds, watching the news for any update.

At noon, the elevator doors opened.

Noah walked in.

Alone.

His suit was wrinkled, his tie loose, his face tired.

Emily’s heart sank.

“They fired you,” she whispered.

Noah shook his head.

A small smile tugged at his lips.

“No. They gave me three months. Three months to prove I didn’t embezzle the money. To prove Elias is behind all of this. If I do it, I stay CEO. If I don’t... I walk away with nothing.”

He walked over, pulling her into a hug.

“We bought time, Emily. That’s all we need.”

Lily crawled over, pulling herself up on Noah’s leg, babbling “Dada! Dada!”

Both of them froze.

It was Lily’s first word.

And she’d said it to Noah.

Tears filled Emily’s eyes.

Noah knelt down, picking Lily up, holding her tight against his chest.

“Hey, little one,” he whispered, his voice thick. “I’m here. I’ve got you.”

Emily watched them, her heart so full it hurt.

For the first time in her life, she felt like she had a family.

But the feeling didn’t last.

Because an hour later, Marcus called.

His voice was tight, urgent.

“Noah. You need to turn on the news. Now.”

Noah grabbed the remote, flipping to CNN.

The headline made Emily’s blood run cold.
