Chapter 9

The papers were signed at 4:17 PM.

Every single document.

The divorce decree.

The financial settlement.

The public retraction.

The non-disparagement clause.

The custody papers for my golden retriever, Max.

I read every page twice before I signed.

Then I picked up the pen and put my name to it, over and over again, each signature feeling like a chain breaking loose from around my ankles.

When I was done, I stood up.

The Pierces were still sitting at the table, looking like they’d been run over by a truck.

Nathan looked up at me, his eyes red and swollen.

"Claire," he said, one last time. "Is there... is there any chance—"

"No," I said, cutting him off. "There isn’t. And don’t ever call me again. Don’t ever write to me. Don’t ever come within five hundred feet of me. If I so much as see your shadow on the same sidewalk as me, I will have you arrested for violating the restraining order. We are done. Forever."

I turned and walked out.

I didn’t look back.

Not even once.

Outside, the sun was setting over the city, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange and pink. Sarah was waiting by the car, holding Max’s leash. When he saw me, Max’s whole body started wiggling so hard he could barely stand. He pulled free of Sarah and came running toward me, nearly knocking me over as he jumped up to lick my face.

"Hey, boy," I said, laughing through my tears as I knelt down and hugged him. "Hey, my sweet boy. Mommy’s got you now. You’re never going back there again."

Mark walked out a minute later, carrying a thick stack of papers.

"It’s official," he said, smiling. "You’re a free woman. The money will be wired into your account by the end of the week. The public retraction goes live on every news site in the state at 9:00 AM tomorrow. And the Pierces... well, let’s just say they’re going to be feeling this for a very long time. Nathan’s trust fund is almost completely gone. Eleanor had to sell some of her jewelry to cover her share. Derek had to sell his car. Vanessa lost all her sponsorships. They’re going to have to sell the family home by the end of the month just to pay the bills."

He paused.

"Are you okay with that? I know it’s harsh. Taking almost everything they have."

I stood up, still holding Max.

I thought about the last five years.

I thought about the nights I’d cried myself to sleep because nothing I did was ever good enough.

I thought about the dinner table, night after night, being criticized, judged, demanded of.

I thought about the two slaps that had changed everything.

I thought about the article, the lies, the attempt to destroy my reputation and my career.

I thought about Eleanor calling me white trash.

"No," I said. "I’m not okay with it. I’m delighted with it. They wanted to play hardball. They wanted to destroy me. They just picked the wrong woman to mess with."

Sarah whooped.

"That’s my girl! Now come on! We’re going to the best steakhouse in the city. We’re ordering the most expensive bottle of wine on the menu. We are celebrating! Claire Bennett is BACK, baby! And she’s better than ever!"

That night, I slept at Sarah’s house, with Max curled up at the foot of the bed.

For the first time in five years...

I didn’t have any nightmares.

I didn’t wake up in a cold sweat, worrying about bills, or arguments, or whether I’d said the wrong thing at dinner.

I slept.

Deeply.

Peacefully.

And when I woke up the next morning, the first thing I saw was the public retraction on the front page of every news site.

**THE PIERCE FAMILY ISSUES FULL APOLOGY AND RETRACTION TO CLAIRE BENNETT PIERCE, ADMITTING ALLEGATIONS WERE FALSE**

The statement was short, cold, and legally precise.

It admitted that every claim in the original article was untrue.

It admitted that Nathan had physically assaulted me.

It admitted that the trust fund had been hidden.

It admitted that the family had been financially dependent on me for five years.

It apologized.

And it wished me well in all my future endeavors.

The comments section was full of people demanding more.

Saying it wasn’t enough.

Saying the Pierces should be in jail.

But I didn’t care.

I had my money.

I had my dog.

I had my freedom.

And most importantly...

I had my life back.

I rolled over and checked my bank account.

The wire had come through overnight.

$4,872,319.44.

Almost five million dollars.

I stared at the number for a long time.

It didn’t feel real.

Five years of my life.

Five years of blood, sweat, and tears.

Five years of being used and abused.

And it all came down to a number on a screen.

But you know what?

It was a start.

I got out of bed, took a shower, and got dressed. I had a press conference with Robert in an hour. Then I was going back to work. Then... who knew?

The world was wide open.

May you like

And for the first time in a very long time...

I couldn’t wait to see what happened next.
