Chapter 1

For 5 years I paid my husband’s family’s bills, medicine, car payments, and every luxury—the day I said, “I’m not your ATM anymore,” he slapped me twice in front of five witnesses… so I blocked every card that night, and one email destroyed everything.

"Starting next month, you'll transfer another fifteen hundred dollars into the Pierce family account."

Eleanor stated this as if it were a long-standing law of the house.

I calmly laid my silverware down.

"If Walter’s medical bills are legitimate, I will review every receipt. However, I am not increasing the monthly allowance."

The sharp sound of metal hitting china echoed in the quiet space.

"Allowance?" Eleanor echoed, her smile chilling. "Is that how you view supporting your husband's family?"

Derek gave an indifferent shrug.

"Don't be dramatic, Claire. Fifteen hundred is pocket change for you. Why are you making such a scene?"

Vanessa adjusted her sleeve, maintaining a polished, fake smile.

"The Pierce family must maintain its image. I have a major charity event this weekend; you wouldn't want me appearing in last season’s attire."

I shifted my focus to Nathan.

I required only a single sentence.

Just one.

"That's enough."

Nathan simply let out a long breath.

"Stop trying to start a fight, Claire. Just process the transfer tomorrow."

In that second, the last string holding me together snapped.

This wasn't a family gathering at all.

It was an auction, and I was the one paying the bill.

I stood up from my chair, my movements deliberate.

"If the money is truly a necessity, be open about it. If it’s for your own vanity, be honest. But do not try to frame it as my duty."

The silence in the room was suffocating.

No one stood for me.

No one challenged the claim.

Eleanor’s tone became razor-sharp.

"You feel superior to this family simply because you pull in a higher paycheck."

I locked gazes with her.

"No. I am simply establishing a limit."

Nathan shoved his chair aside and rose to his feet.

"Offer my mother an apology. Now."

Nathan pushed back his chair, his voice so cold that the entire room fell silent.

I looked him straight in the eyes.

"No. I will never apologize for setting a boundary."

For a heartbeat, time seemed to stop.

Then he stepped toward me.

The first strike came without warning. It sent me stumbling backward, too shocked to understand what had just happened. The room froze. Walter weakly called his son's name but never left his chair. Derek remained silent. Vanessa lowered her gaze as though none of this concerned her.

Only Eleanor spoke.

"If you don't teach your wife her place tonight, she'll be walking all over this family tomorrow."

I slowly touched my burning cheek.

"...Did you just hit me?"

Nathan didn't answer.

He simply stared at me with eyes I no longer recognized.

"And you're still talking back?"

The second blow came before I could react. I lost my balance and fell to the floor. My handbag burst open, scattering my keys, wallet, and lipstick across the hardwood.

Vanessa calmly bent down, picked up the lipstick, and sighed.

"Claire... just apologize. It will all be over."

I looked up at the five faces surrounding me.

Not one of them asked if I was okay.

Not one of them took a single step toward me.

To them, the only thing that truly mattered was whether I would keep financing their lives.

A quiet laugh escaped my lips.

The sound echoed through the dining room.

Nathan frowned.

"What the hell is so funny?"

I slowly rose to my feet, meeting every pair of eyes in the room.

"I'm laughing because I finally understand who I really am."

"I was never your daughter-in-law."

"I was nothing more than a breathing ATM."

"And as of this moment..."

"...that ATM is permanently out of service."

Nathan's expression darkened.

His jaw tightened.

Without another word, he took one slow step toward me... and raised his hand for a third time.

This time...

I didn't move.
