Chapter 7

The tower did not collapse all at once.

It leaned.

Paused.

Then the lower columns twisted with a sound like thunder.

“Move!” someone screamed through the live feed.

Samuel dragged Brandon behind the shelter wall as concrete crashed onto the track.

Dust swallowed the camera.

The screen went black.

No one in the conference room breathed.

Emily’s fingers dug into the edge of the table.

“Bring it back.”

The technician worked frantically.

“The camera lost power.”

“Use thermal imaging.”

“Drone is repositioning.”

Daniel stood behind Emily, one hand hovering near her back without touching.

He wanted to hold her.

She wanted to let him.

But too many truths stood between them.

A drone image appeared.

The east tower had fallen against the unfinished west frame instead of collapsing straight down.

The worker shelter remained visible beneath a canopy of steel.

Partially crushed.

But not buried.

Torres spoke into the command channel.

“Report.”

Static.

Then coughing.

“We have survivors.”

Emily closed her eyes.

A sob escaped Margaret.

Charles gripped the back of a chair.

“What about Brandon?”

No answer came.

Rescue crews entered through the service tunnel.

The main charges had been disarmed.

The secondary charges under the shelter had not detonated.

Water from the broken drainage system had damaged the circuit.

The same storm that weakened the foundation had saved dozens of lives.

Minutes crawled past.

The nurse urged Emily to sit.

She refused until dizziness blurred her vision.

Daniel caught her before she fell.

“That’s enough.”

“Let go.”

“No.”

“I need to see the screen.”

“You can see it sitting down.”

He lowered her into a chair.

She did not have the strength to fight him.

The doctor checked her blood pressure again.

“You are bleeding more than you should.”

Emily looked down.

A dark stain spread beneath the hospital blanket wrapped around her waist.

Daniel’s face changed.

“We’re going back to the hospital.”

“No.”

“Now.”

“My brother—”

“Will still be your brother while you receive medical care.”

She looked toward Liam.

He slept in the bassinet.

“What if something happens?”

“Then Ava and Torres will tell us.”

Emily began to shake.

The adrenaline had hidden the pain.

Now it crashed through her body.

The doctor called for the medical van.

Daniel lifted Emily before she could protest.

“I can walk.”

“You cannot.”

She pressed her face against his shoulder, angry at herself for needing him.

He carried her through the building.

Rain blew across the entrance.

The van doors opened.

As Daniel climbed inside, Ava ran after them.

“They found Brandon.”

Emily lifted her head.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

Relief hit so hard it hurt.

“And Samuel?”

“Alive. Several injuries. No confirmed deaths.”

Emily began crying.

Not softly.

Not gracefully.

She had held everything inside since Liam’s birth.

Her parents’ rejection.

The attempted theft.

The fraud.

Daniel’s lie.

The fire.

The explosion.

Now it all broke free.

Daniel held her while the van raced toward the hospital.

She did not forgive him.

But she let him hold her.

At St. Matthew’s, doctors rushed Emily into surgery.

Daniel remained outside with Liam.

Charles and Margaret arrived twenty minutes later.

Neither spoke to him.

They sat across the private waiting room, looking like people who had aged ten years in one night.

Margaret watched Daniel feed Liam from a small bottle.

“You know how to do that?” she asked.

“My sister has three children.”

Margaret nodded.

Silence returned.

Then she whispered, “May I hold him?”

Daniel looked at her.

Margaret’s eyes filled with shame.

“I know I have no right.”

“No,” he said. “You don’t.”

She lowered her head.

Charles stared at the floor.

Daniel continued.

“But that decision belongs to Emily.”

Margaret nodded again.

“I understand.”

A surgeon entered two hours later.

Daniel stood immediately.

“How is she?”

“She had a postpartum hemorrhage. We controlled the bleeding. She is stable.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Margaret began sobbing.

Charles asked, “Can we see her?”

“One person when she wakes.”

All three looked at Liam.

The surgeon smiled faintly.

“Four, if we count him.”

Daniel entered Emily’s recovery room with Liam in his arms.

Morning light pressed through the blinds.

Emily looked pale and exhausted.

Her eyes opened slowly.

“Liam?”

“Right here.”

Daniel brought the baby close.

She touched Liam’s cheek.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“Brandon?”

“Alive. Severe leg injury. He’s under guard.”

“Samuel?”

“Alive. He helped rescue twelve people before the collapse.”

Emily closed her eyes again.

Daniel sat beside the bed.

“I nearly lost you.”

“You didn’t.”

“I could have.”

She heard fear in his voice.

Not strategic concern.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Emily looked at him.

“Tell me everything.”

He knew what she meant.

“Now?”

“Now.”

Daniel placed Liam in the hospital bassinet.

Then he returned to the chair.

“Three years ago, Reed Global considered acquiring Carter Development. Your company had valuable land, strong city relationships, and terrible debt.”

“You approached my father.”

“He refused before negotiations began.”

“So you approached employees.”

“Former employees. Consultants. People who understood the company.”

“And me.”

“Yes.”

“Why me specifically?”

“You had resigned six weeks earlier. Industry contacts said there had been a serious dispute between you and Charles.”

“You thought I would betray my family.”

“I thought you might explain why the company was rejecting rescue capital.”

“And after we met?”

“I knew within twenty minutes I would not ask you.”

Emily studied him.

“Why?”

“Because you spent the entire conversation defending people who had just pushed you out.”

“That sounds foolish now.”

“It sounded loyal.”

“Or weak.”

“Never weak.”

He leaned forward.

“I asked you for coffee under false pretenses. I knew your identity and did not disclose mine fully. I said I worked in private investment. I did not say I controlled the firm that had tried to buy your family’s company.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me after we became serious?”

“Every day I waited made it harder.”

“That is cowardice.”

“Yes.”

The lack of defense unsettled her.

Daniel continued.

“When you told me about the duplicate invoices, I wanted you to go to authorities immediately. You refused because you feared innocent employees would lose everything.”

“I remember.”

“I hired outside investigators without telling you.”

Emily’s eyes sharpened.

“You did what?”

“I needed to know whether the fraud threatened Reed Global’s loans.”

“So even then, business came first.”

“At that moment, protecting thousands of investors and employees was also my duty.”

“Did you use the documents I gave you?”

“Only after you gave written permission six months ago.”

She remembered signing an authorization.

A broad review.

She had trusted him.

“What else haven’t you told me?”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“My board wanted me to end our relationship.”

Emily stared at him.

“Why?”

“They believed it created a conflict. They thought you might be using me to save your stake.”

A bitter laugh escaped her.

“My family thought you were using me. Your board thought I was using you.”

“I rejected their recommendation.”

“Did they know I was pregnant?”

“No. Not until yesterday.”

“Why did we keep Liam secret?”

“You asked for privacy.”

“And you agreed too easily.”

“I wanted to protect you from the press.”

“Or protect the deal?”

“There was no deal.”

Emily watched him carefully.

“Do you still want Carter Development?”

Daniel answered without hesitation.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because if it survives, it should belong to the employees and honest shareholders. Not me.”

The door opened.

Ava stepped inside.

“Sorry. This cannot wait.”

She carried a tablet.

Emily pushed herself higher.

“What happened?”

Ava’s expression was grave.

“Samuel Ortiz made a statement.”

Daniel stood.

“About Brandon?”

“About Charles.”

Emily looked toward the hallway, where her father waited.

Ava placed the tablet on the bed.

“Samuel says Charles personally ordered the original South Harbor test concealed.”

Emily felt the room turn cold.

“No.”

“He says Brandon offered the bribe, but Charles approved the removal.”

Daniel’s jaw hardened.

Emily stared at Ava.

“My father said he didn’t know.”

“He lied.”

The door behind Ava moved.

Charles stood there.

He had heard everything.

Emily looked at him.

“Tell me she’s wrong.”

Charles’s eyes filled with something worse than fear.

Defeat.

May you like

“I can explain.”

Emily’s heart broke in a place she had believed was already empty.
