Chapter 3

Brandon reached the elevator before Daniel’s security team caught him.

He fought like a trapped animal.

“Get your hands off me!”

Patients and staff stared from the hallway.

One officer held his arms while the other pulled his phone from his hand.

Ava stepped outside the room.

“Do not search the device,” she warned. “Secure it and wait for law enforcement.”

Brandon’s face twisted.

“You have no authority over me.”

“You tried to flee after learning company records had been preserved.”

“I was leaving a hospital.”

“You ran.”

“I had an emergency.”

“What emergency?”

Brandon said nothing.

The elevator doors opened.

Two Chicago police officers stepped out, followed by a plainclothes investigator carrying an identification wallet.

“Special Agent Maya Torres,” the woman said. “Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

Margaret sank into the chair.

Charles looked as though someone had struck him.

Brandon stopped struggling.

Agent Torres approached him.

“Mr. Carter, we need to speak with you regarding suspected financial crimes connected to the South Harbor redevelopment project.”

“I want a lawyer.”

“That is your right.”

Ava glanced at Emily.

Emily nodded once.

She had known investigators were reviewing the shell companies.

She had not expected them to move so quickly.

Agent Torres looked through the open doorway.

“Ms. Carter?”

Emily raised her hand slightly.

“I’m Emily.”

“I’m sorry to approach you under these circumstances. We received information that relevant evidence may be in immediate danger.”

Emily looked at Brandon.

“What evidence?”

Torres’s gaze remained on him.

“We have reason to believe someone attempted to access the Carter Development server remotely ten minutes ago.”

Daniel’s security officer held up Brandon’s phone.

“He was using this when he ran.”

Brandon shook his head.

“That proves nothing.”

Agent Torres did not argue.

She turned to Charles.

“Mr. Carter, is your son authorized to delete archived project files?”

“No.”

“Does he have administrative access?”

Charles hesitated.

Brandon looked at him sharply.

“Dad.”

Charles’s face hardened.

“Yes.”

Margaret whispered, “Charles, don’t.”

He ignored her.

“He has full access.”

Agent Torres nodded.

“Thank you.”

Brandon glared at his father.

“You just handed me over.”

Charles looked at him with a grief Emily had never seen before.

“What did you do to South Harbor?”

“I didn’t do anything.”

“Tell me the truth.”

“I protected the company.”

“From what?”

Brandon’s voice cracked.

“From a failed test that would have delayed construction for a year.”

Emily closed her eyes.

There it was.

Charles stepped closer.

“You altered a structural report?”

“I didn’t alter it.”

“Who did?”

Brandon’s silence answered.

Daniel’s voice turned cold.

“People live in those buildings.”

“They aren’t occupied yet.”

“Construction crews work there every day.”

“The foundation was reinforced later.”

“Was it retested?”

Brandon looked away.

Emily’s stomach tightened.

“Was it retested?” she demanded.

“I don’t know.”

Charles struck him.

The sound echoed down the corridor.

Margaret screamed.

Brandon staggered sideways, holding his cheek.

One of the officers moved between them.

“Sir, step back.”

Charles did, breathing hard.

“You risked lives,” he said.

Brandon’s eyes filled with rage.

“For you.”

“Do not put this on me.”

“You demanded the project open by October. You told me delays were unacceptable. You said we would lose the city contract.”

“I meant solve the problem, not falsify reports.”

“You never cared how I solved anything as long as I made you proud.”

Charles looked wounded.

Brandon laughed bitterly.

“You wanted a son who would win. That’s what I became.”

Emily watched them destroy each other with truths they had avoided for years.

Margaret stood between them.

“Stop this. Both of you.”

Agent Torres signaled to the uniformed officers.

Brandon pulled away.

“You can’t arrest me based on a conversation.”

“We are detaining you while we execute a warrant on your office and residence.”

“My residence?”

“And any property connected to North Crest Consulting.”

Brandon looked at Emily.

“You did this.”

She held his gaze.

“No. You did.”

As the officers led him toward the elevator, he twisted around.

“You think Reed loves you?”

Daniel’s expression did not change.

Brandon shouted louder.

“You think he chose you because you’re special? Ask him why he first approached you. Ask him what he wanted from Carter Development.”

Emily’s eyes moved to Daniel.

Brandon smiled when he saw her reaction.

“That’s right. She doesn’t know.”

“Keep walking,” Agent Torres ordered.

But Brandon was not finished.

“He used you, Emily! He needed someone inside the company!”

Daniel took one step toward him.

Ava blocked his path.

“Not here.”

The elevator doors closed around Brandon.

Silence returned.

Emily looked at Daniel.

“What did he mean?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Not now.”

Her exhaustion disappeared beneath a surge of alarm.

“What did he mean?”

“Emily, you just gave birth.”

“That did not stop everyone else from bringing business into this room.”

Charles gave a low laugh.

“You never told her?”

Daniel turned toward him.

“Stay out of this.”

Charles looked at Emily.

“Reed Global tried to buy Carter Development three years ago. I refused.”

Emily remembered.

A private proposal.

An aggressive valuation.

Charles had called it an insult.

Charles continued.

“Then Daniel began approaching people inside the company.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“I approached potential partners.”

“You approached my daughter.”

Emily stared at Daniel.

“Is that true?”

He looked at her.

The hesitation was enough.

Her chest tightened.

“When we met at the Lakeshore conference,” she said slowly, “did you already know who I was?”

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more because it came quickly.

“Did you speak to me because of Carter Development?”

“At first.”

Margaret made a sound of satisfaction.

Emily ignored her.

She watched Daniel.

“At first?”

“I wanted to understand why the company had rejected an offer that would have solved its debt problem. You had recently left. I thought you might know why.”

“So you took me to dinner.”

“I invited you for coffee.”

“Then dinner.”

“Yes.”

“And when did it stop being business?”

“The first night.”

She laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expected a bitter former executive. Instead, I met a woman who refused to criticize the family that had humiliated her.”

Emily looked away.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I did not know about the fraud. I did not know you had evidence. I did not know I would fall in love with you.”

“But you knew exactly who I was.”

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe our meeting was accidental.”

“Yes.”

The word cut deeper than any excuse.

Emily’s eyes filled despite her efforts.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“I should have told you.”

“You had two years.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“That you would think every moment after that was part of a plan.”

“Wasn’t it?”

“No.”

“How am I supposed to know?”

Daniel looked at Liam.

“You know how I feel about our son.”

“I know how you looked when you held him.”

“And you know how I feel about you.”

“I thought I did.”

Margaret moved closer to the bed.

“Emily, this is exactly why we warned you about hiding relationships.”

Emily turned on her.

“You did not warn me. You condemned my child.”

“I was upset.”

“You called him a scandal.”

“I didn’t know his father.”

“That is the point.”

Margaret recoiled.

Emily looked back at Daniel.

“Leave.”

His face tightened.

“Emily.”

“I need you to leave.”

“You shouldn’t be alone.”

“I’m not alone.”

She looked at Ava.

Ava nodded.

“I’ll stay.”

Daniel’s pain was visible now.

It almost made Emily change her mind.

Almost.

“Please,” she said.

He stood still for several seconds.

Then he bent and kissed Liam’s forehead.

“I love you,” he whispered.

Emily did not know whether he meant the baby, her, or both.

Daniel straightened.

“To protect Emily and Liam, my officers will remain outside.”

“I don’t need protection from my parents.”

Charles’s expression darkened.

Daniel looked at him.

“Noted.”

Then he walked out.

Margaret watched him go.

“You have made a terrible mistake.”

Emily’s anger flared.

“Which one? Loving him, trusting you, or refusing to sign away my future?”

Margaret had no answer.

Charles moved to the window.

He looked older than he had an hour earlier.

“My company is collapsing.”

Emily stared at his back.

“Your company was collapsing long before today.”

“I could have fixed it.”

“You refused to see it.”

“I trusted my son.”

“You had two children.”

He turned.

For the first time, shame touched his face.

Before he could respond, Agent Torres returned.

She carried a tablet.

“We found something,” she said.

Emily sat straighter.

“What?”

“A live camera feed from the South Harbor construction site went offline twelve minutes ago.”

Charles frowned.

“Why does that matter?”

“Because a foreman reported unusual movement in the east tower foundation.”

Emily felt cold.

“Movement?”

Agent Torres’s voice was controlled.

“Cracking.”

Ava stood.

“Has the site been evacuated?”

“We’re trying. The foreman says several workers are still inside.”

Charles reached for his phone.

“I’ll call the project manager.”

Torres shook her head.

“He is not answering.”

Emily looked at the rain streaking the hospital window.

Chicago had been hit by storms for two days.

Water pressure.

Weak soil.

A falsified foundation report.

“Who is the project manager?” she asked.

Charles did not answer.

Emily already knew.

“Melissa Grant,” she whispered.

Agent Torres nodded.

Margaret looked confused.

“Brandon’s girlfriend?”

Emily pushed back the blanket.

Ava rushed toward her.

“What are you doing?”

“I need my laptop.”

“You need to stay in bed.”

“The original engineering files are on an encrypted backup.”

“Where?”

“At my apartment.”

Charles turned.

“You kept company data at home?”

“I kept proof.”

Agent Torres stepped closer.

“Can you access it remotely?”

Emily shook her head.

“I designed it so no one could.”

A deep alarm began sounding from Agent Torres’s tablet.

Everyone stared at the screen.

The east tower camera flickered back for one second.

They saw a concrete column split.

Then the image vanished.

Torres lifted her radio.

“Immediate collapse risk. Evacuate all personnel now.”

Emily clutched Liam.

May you like

Somewhere across the city, workers were running for their lives.

And the evidence that could tell engineers where the structure would fail was locked inside her apartment.
