Chapter 5

Elena gets home at 5:30 a.m.

Richard is waiting in the kitchen.

Coffee made.

Pale.

Worried.

He read the note.

“Where were you?” he asks.

His voice is tight.

Controlled.

But hurt.

“Lake house,” Elena says.

She drops into a chair.

Exhausted.

“With Vivian.”

Richard sits across from her.

Waits.

He knows better than to push.

Elena tells him everything.

The cancer.

The blackmail.

The twenty million.

Julian’s plan for Margaret.

The kiss.

She leaves nothing out.

When she’s done, Richard is quiet for a long time.

He stirs his coffee.

“Twenty million,” he says finally.

Elena nods.

“I don’t have it,” she says. “Not liquid. Not without selling everything. And even then…”

Richard nods.

He’s a lawyer.

He knows her finances better than she does.

“What are you going to do?” he asks.

Elena looks at him.

Really looks.

She’s been so wrapped up in her own world, she hasn’t been paying attention.

Richard has bags under his eyes.

He’s lost weight.

He’s been just as scared as she has.

And she left him a note and ran off in the middle of the night.

“I’m sorry,” she says.

Richard blinks.

“For what?”

“For leaving,” she says. “For not telling you. For dragging you into this mess.”

Richard reaches across the table.

Takes her hand.

His is warm.

Solid.

“You didn’t drag me anywhere,” he says. “I married you. That means your family is my family. Your mess is my mess. Good and bad.”

Elena’s eyes fill.

She doesn’t deserve him.

She never has.

“What do we do?” she asks.

Her voice is small.

Like a child’s.

Richard squeezes her hand.

“First,” he says. “We make sure Margaret is safe. If Julian really is planning something—”

“He is,” Elena says. “I saw his face. He meant it.”

“Then we move Margaret,” Richard says. “Somewhere Julian can’t get to her. A hotel. With security. Now. Before he acts.”

Elena nods.

“Second,” Richard continues. “We go to the police. About the blackmail. About Julian’s threats.”

“No,” Elena says quickly. “Vivian said—she said these people are dangerous. If the police get involved, they’ll kill everyone. Vivian. Noah. All of us.”

Richard’s jaw tightens.

“Elena, we can’t negotiate with terrorists.”

“They’re not terrorists,” Elena says. “They’re criminals. Julian’s old Army contacts. People who don’t play by rules. If we go to the police, we start a war we can’t win.”

“Then what?” Richard says. “We pay them? Twenty million dollars? Elena, that’s half your net worth. And even if we pay, what’s to stop them from coming back for more?”

Elena doesn’t answer.

She doesn’t have one.

Lila stumbles into the kitchen.

Rumpled.

Pajamas.

Eyes red.

She hasn’t slept either.

“Are you guys going to talk about me like I’m not here?” she asks.

Elena and Richard separate their hands quickly.

“Honey—” Elena starts.

“I heard everything,” Lila says. She leans against the counter. “From the top of the stairs. The cancer. The money. Julian wanting to kill Grandma. All of it.”

Elena stands.

“Lila, I didn’t want you to—”

“Didn’t want me to what?” Lila snaps. “Know that my father is alive and a psychopath? That my aunt is dying? That my whole family is completely insane?”

Her voice breaks.

“I’m sixteen, Mom,” she says. “I’m not a baby anymore. I have a right to know.”

Elena crosses to her.

Pulls her into a hug.

Lila fights for half a second.

Then melts.

Cries into her mother’s shoulder.

“I’m scared,” Lila whispers.

“I know,” Elena says. “Me too.”

They stand like that for a long time.

Three people holding onto each other.

Against the world.

Richard breaks the moment.

“I’m calling Margaret,” he says. “We’re getting her out of that house today.”

He leaves the room.

Elena holds Lila tighter.

“It’ll be okay,” she says.

She doesn’t know if she believes it.

That afternoon, they move Margaret into the penthouse suite at the Grand.

The best hotel in the city.

24/7 security.

Keycard access only on the top floor.

Margaret fights them every step of the way.

“This is ridiculous,” she says as they walk into the suite. “I’m not hiding in a hotel like some criminal.”

“Julian wants to kill you, Mom,” Elena says. “Forgive me for not taking chances.”

Margaret snorts.

“Julian wouldn’t hurt me. He needs me alive. He needs my money.”

“Vivian is dying,” Elena says. “Once she’s gone, you’re just an obstacle. He’ll find another way to get the money. He doesn’t need you.”

Margaret’s face falls.

She knows Elena is right.

“Fine,” Margaret says. She drops her suitcase. “But I’m not staying longer than a week. This bed gives me back pain.”

Elena rolls her eyes.

Some things never change.

That night, Elena is in her home office.

Going through old files.

Looking for anything.

Any leverage against Julian.

Any way out.

Lila knocks.

Comes in.

Holding a cardboard box.

“I found this in the attic,” she says. “It says ‘Julian’ on it.”

She sets the box on the desk.

Elena stares at it.

She hasn’t seen this box in twelve years.

She thought she threw everything away.

“Open it,” Lila says.

Elena hesitates.

Then lifts the lid.

Old clothes.

Dog tags.

A watch that stopped at 11:47.

The time of the “accident.”

Letters.

Stacks of them.

Elena picks one up.

Dated three months before the crash.

*My dearest Elena—*

She stops reading.

She can’t.

Not now.

She digs deeper.

At the bottom—

A stack of bank statements.

Old.

From an account she’s never seen.

Joint account.

Julian Carter and Vivian Whitmore.

Elena’s blood runs cold.

She spreads them out.

Monthly statements.

For four years before the accident.

Deposits.

Big ones.

Fifty thousand.

A hundred thousand.

Two hundred thousand.

Always cash.

Always from different banks.

Lila leans over her shoulder.

“What is it?”

Elena doesn’t answer.

She does the math in her head.

Over four years—

Almost three million dollars.

Cash.

Untraceable.

“Where did he get this kind of money?” Lila whispers.

Elena remembers.

Julian was the treasurer of the Whitmore Family Foundation.

For five years.

Before the “accident.”

Elena’s hands shake as she reaches for the foundation’s old reports.

She cross-references the dates.

Every time there’s a big cash deposit in Julian and Vivian’s account—

There’s a “miscellaneous expense” in the foundation books for the exact same amount.

“Oh my God,” Elena breathes.

He was stealing.

Three million dollars.

From her family’s charity.

From sick kids. From homeless veterans. From single mothers.

He stole it.

And Vivian helped him.

They were going to run away with it.

The blackmail story.

The enemies.

It was all a lie.

At least partly.

Julian didn’t need to pay anyone off.

He stole the money.

And now he’s blown through it.

And he needs more.

That’s why they’re really here.

Not because Vivian is dying.

Well—she is dying.

But that’s just convenient.

The real reason—

The only reason—

Is money.

Elena keeps going through the statements.

The last one.

Dated one month before the accident.

Balance: $2,847,219.00.

Withdrawn.

All of it.

Cash.

Gone.

Elena sits back.

Stares at the wall.

Twelve years.

She grieved a thief.

A liar.

A man who stole from children.

And her sister helped him.

Lila reaches into the box again.

Pulls out a manila envelope.

Sealed.

Written on the front in Vivian’s handwriting:

*For Lila. On her 18th birthday.*

Lila looks at Elena.

Eyes wide.

“Open it,” Elena says.

Her voice is hollow.

Lila tears the seal.

Pulls out a single sheet of paper.

She reads it.

Her face goes white.

She drops it like it burned her.

“Lila?” Elena says. “What is it?”

Lila can’t speak.

She just points.

Elena picks up the paper.

It’s a letter.

From Vivian.

Dated the day Lila was born.

*My dearest Lila,*

*By the time you read this, I’ll be gone. One way or another. And you’ll be eighteen. Old enough to understand. Old enough to handle the truth.*

*You’re going to hate me for this. I know I would. But I can’t take it to my grave without telling you.*

*Julian isn’t just your father.*

*He’s Noah’s father too.*

*But there’s something else.*

*Something no one knows.*

*Richard was away on business the month you were conceived.*

*Julian and I… we weren’t careful.*

*There was a night.*

*Just one.*

*I was so drunk I could barely stand.*

*And Julian—*

*He wasn’t with me that night.*

*He was with your mother.*

*The DNA test is in the envelope.*

*Julian is your father, Lila.*

*But he’s also Noah’s father.*

*Which means—*

*You and Noah share the same dad.*

*But you don’t share the same mom.*

*Because I’m not your aunt, Lila.*

*I’m your mother.*

Elena reads the words.

Again.

And again.

And again.

The room tilts.

The paper slips from her fingers.

Lila is sobbing now.

Screaming.

“No,” she’s saying. “No, no, no, no—”

Elena can’t breathe.

She looks at her daughter.

*Her* daughter.

The baby she held.

The little girl she raised.

The child she loved more than life itself.

And suddenly—

She’s not hers.

Not really.

Vivian’s words from the gala echo in her head:

*“She has the same hair…”*

She wasn’t talking about Elena.

She was talking about Lila.

Vivian wasn’t staring at Elena that day.

She was staring at her own daughter.

The daughter she gave away.

The daughter Elena raised as her own.

Everything makes sense now.

Everything.

The lie.

The disappearance.

The dramatic return.

It was never about the foundation money.

Not really.

It was about Lila.

Vivian is dying.

She wants her daughter back.

Before it’s too late.

And Julian—

Julian wants everything.

Lila.

Noah.

The money.

Elena’s whole life.

Elena looks at Lila.

Sobbing on the floor.

May you like

And she knows—

The worst is yet to come.
