Chapter 5

The protection detail arrived an hour later.

Two uniformed officers took positions outside my apartment building. Another plainclothes detective sat in an unmarked car across the street. Detective Marquez wasn't taking any chances.

Neither was I.

I spent the morning making calls. My lawyer. Lily's school. The daycare center. I changed all the locks on my doors even though the building already had security. I bought a video doorbell. I moved Lily into my bedroom, closer to me, so I would hear if she woke up.

She slept until nearly noon.

When she finally opened her eyes, she looked confused for a moment, like she didn't recognize where she was. Then she saw me sitting beside the bed and her face crumpled.

“Daddy.”

I pulled her into my arms. She clung to me, burying her face in my shirt.

“I had a bad dream,” she whispered. “About the cold place.”

My heart broke all over again.

“It wasn't a dream, baby,” I said softly. “But it's over now. Grandma can't hurt you anymore. I promise.”

She pulled back to look at me. Her eyes were serious, too serious for a seven-year-old.

“Where's Mommy?”

The question hung in the air between us.

“Mommy is... she's dealing with some hard things right now,” I said carefully. “She knows you're safe. She knows you're with me.”

“Is she mad at Grandma?”

“I think she's very sad,” I said. “And very confused.”

Lily nodded slowly, like she understood things no child should ever have to understand.

“Grandma says Mommy knows,” she said quietly. “She says Mommy lets her do it because I'm bad.”

The room spun.

I gripped her shoulders gently, making sure she was looking at me.

“What did you say, Lily?”

“Last time. When Grandma put me in. She said... she said Mommy knows I'm a bad girl. She said Mommy agrees that I need the cold to learn my lesson.”

I couldn't breathe.

Taylor knew.

She knew. And she'd let it happen.

All those nights I'd come home late from work. All those weekends Taylor had “needed a break” and asked Evelyn to watch Lily. All those times Lily had been quiet, withdrawn, wearing extra layers even in the middle of summer.

Taylor had known.

My ex-wife—the woman I'd loved, the woman I'd built a life with—had allowed her mother to torture our daughter.

“Daddy?” Lily's voice was small, frightened. “You're squeezing me too tight.”

I let go immediately.

“I'm sorry, baby. I'm so sorry.” I pulled her close again, more gently this time. “None of this is your fault. You hear me? None of it. You are not bad. You are the best thing that ever happened to me. And Grandma... Grandma is very, very sick. And she will never, ever touch you again.”

I held her for a long time after that. Long after her breathing steadied, long after she stopped trembling.

When I finally stood up, I called my lawyer.

Tom Holloway had been my attorney through the divorce. He was tough, smart, and hated bullies more than anything. I told him everything—what Lily had said, what Detective Marquez had found, Daniel Carter's death.

When I finished, Tom was quiet for a full minute.

“Okay,” he said finally. “Here's what we do. First, we file for emergency full custody. Today. No joint custody. No visitation for Taylor until she's been fully evaluated and we know the extent of her involvement. Second, we get Lily into therapy with the best child psychologist in the state—someone who specializes in trauma and can testify in court. Third, we dig into Evelyn's past. Every skeleton in her closet. Every rumor. Every incident. If she killed her own son twenty-five years ago, we're going to prove it.”

He paused.

“Ethan... this is going to get ugly. Taylor is going to fight. Evelyn is going to fight. They're going to say you're unstable. That you're brainwashing Lily. That the divorce made you crazy. They'll drag your name through the mud. They'll use every dirty trick in the book.”

“I don't care,” I said. My voice was steel. “They can do whatever they want to me. But they are not getting Lily back. Not after what they did.”

“Good,” Tom said. “Because we're not just fighting for custody. We're fighting to put Evelyn Carter in prison for the rest of her life. And if Taylor knew about this... we're going after her too.”

He was right.

This wasn't just about custody anymore.

It was about justice. For Lily. For Daniel Carter. For every child Evelyn had ever hurt.

And I was going to burn their entire world to the ground to get it.
