Chapter 8

Captain Mercer changed course toward Prescott Platform Seven.

The Coast Guard cutter continued approaching from the west.

Richard’s launch boat had a twenty-minute lead.

Commander Shaw warned Laura that the federal warrant remained active.

Until the bribery evidence reached an independent authority, any agency could legally detain her.

Laura stood on the bridge holding the waterproof case.

“Can your drone reach us before the platform?”

“Eight minutes,” Shaw said.

“And after you receive the drive?”

“I send duplicates to three agencies and two federal prosecutors outside Florida.”

Claire leaned toward the screen.

“Do not send anything through Miami field offices.”

Shaw looked at her.

“Why?”

“Richard owns people there.”

“That is a serious accusation.”

Claire opened the ledger to the federal payment section.

“So is this.”

The drone arrived over the stern.

Crew members secured the retrieval line.

Laura placed one drive, copies of the ledgers, and Dr. Morrow’s recorder into the capsule.

She kept the original drive.

Redundancy had kept her alive in the Coast Guard.

Evidence needed the same protection.

The drone lifted away.

Everyone watched until it disappeared toward the cutter.

Nathan was brought to the bridge in restraints.

Captain Mercer had ordered his transfer because the lower detention area was no longer secure.

Nathan looked through the windows at the distant lights of Platform Seven.

His face changed.

“He’s going there?”

Claire watched him carefully.

“What is on that platform?”

Nathan said nothing.

Laura stepped closer.

“Your father left you behind.”

“He will come back.”

“He escaped with Hargrove. Not you.”

Nathan looked away.

“You were supposed to be part of his emergency boat,” Vivian said. “He chose himself.”

“Shut up.”

“He always chooses himself.”

Nathan turned on her.

“You made me believe he loved me.”

Vivian’s voice broke.

“I needed to believe it too.”

Nathan stared at the deck.

Laura studied him.

He was still dangerous.

Still responsible.

But abandonment had cracked something inside him.

“What is on Platform Seven?” she asked again.

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“Original prototype parts.”

“From my father’s work?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then what do you know?”

Nathan looked toward Claire.

“That platform is where Father takes people who refuse to sign.”

Silence.

Dr. Morrow stepped forward.

“Emily Reed?”

Nathan did not answer.

“Sofia Ramirez?” the doctor pressed.

His eyes shifted.

That was enough.

Laura felt cold.

“How many people?”

Nathan’s voice became barely audible.

“I never counted.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Claire stared at her brother in horror.

“You knew.”

“I knew Father handled problems.”

“You knew women disappeared.”

Nathan looked at her.

“You disappeared too.”

“I escaped my husband.”

“Father called that betrayal.”

Laura grabbed Nathan’s collar.

“Are there bodies on that platform?”

Captain Mercer moved toward her.

Laura did not release him.

Nathan swallowed.

“There’s a sealed lower chamber.”

“What is inside?”

“I never went down.”

“Hargrove did.”

Laura let him go.

The platform grew larger ahead.

Steel towers rose from black water.

Only a few work lights were on.

No active crew signal appeared.

Richard had shut it down.

Commander Shaw returned on-screen.

“We received the evidence. Judge Avery’s warrant is being challenged. My boarding team is five minutes behind you.”

Laura looked at the platform.

“Richard has five minutes to destroy everything.”

“You are not authorized to board.”

“He murdered my father and may have hidden victims there.”

“Laura.”

“Commander, you trained under me.”

“That does not put you above procedure.”

“No. It means you know I understand what delay costs.”

Shaw’s expression tightened.

“I also know you taught us never to enter an unknown structure without backup.”

Laura looked at the platform again.

“I taught you never to confuse backup with permission.”

The connection ended.

Captain Mercer did not stop her.

He prepared a small rescue boat.

Laura, Claire, and two independent ship officers boarded.

Vivian remained with Margaret.

Nathan watched from the bridge.

As the rescue boat lowered, he called out.

“Laura.”

She looked up.

“The lower chamber uses a mechanical lock.”

“What key?”

Nathan stared at the brass key around her neck.

“That one.”

The rescue boat crossed the dark water.

Wind whipped salt against Laura’s face.

Platform Seven loomed overhead.

Richard’s launch craft was tied beneath the eastern ladder.

They were there.

Laura climbed first.

The upper deck was empty.

A door stood open near the control tower.

Inside, computer screens had been smashed.

Paper burned inside a metal bin.

Claire pulled several pages from the fire.

Payment records.

Photographs.

Ship manifests.

Hargrove’s voice echoed from below.

“Hurry!”

Laura moved toward a grated staircase.

One officer remained with the boat.

The second followed Laura and Claire down.

The next level smelled of oil and smoke.

A corridor led to a heavy steel door.

The brass keyhole waited at its center.

Laura inserted the key.

It turned.

The door opened into a chamber filled with shelves.

Thomas Bennett’s original patent documents lay inside waterproof containers.

Prototype components.

Notebooks.

Video tapes.

Her father had hidden everything beneath a platform Richard later purchased, believing it was empty.

Claire found a handwritten note taped to the wall.

For Laura.

Laura unfolded it.

My brave girl,

If you are reading this, I failed to come home.

Do not let anger decide who you become.

Truth is stronger when carried into daylight.

Protect your mother.

Protect yourself.

And remember that strength without mercy becomes the thing we fought.

Love,

Dad

Laura pressed the note against her chest.

A loud metallic crash sounded deeper below.

Claire found another door at the back.

It opened into a narrow stairwell descending beneath sea level.

Cold air rose from below.

They followed.

At the bottom, Hargrove stood beside a control box.

Richard carried a canister of fuel.

Behind them were four sealed cells.

Three were empty.

One contained a woman.

Alive.

Thin.

Terrified.

Dr. Morrow’s missing patient.

Sofia Ramirez.

Claire gasped.

Richard turned.

His face twisted when he saw Laura.

“You never stop.”

Laura stepped into the chamber.

“You should have learned that from my father.”

Richard poured fuel across the floor.

Hargrove raised a gun.

The ship officer beside Laura aimed back.

“Drop it.”

Hargrove laughed.

“You have no jurisdiction here.”

The officer replied, “I do not need jurisdiction to stop a murder.”

Sofia gripped the bars.

“Please.”

Laura looked at Richard.

“How long has she been here?”

“She signed the wrong documents.”

Sofia shouted, “He kept me because I saw the others!”

“What others?” Claire asked.

Sofia pointed toward a sealed hatch in the floor.

Richard’s expression changed.

The chamber beneath.

The victims Nathan mentioned.

Hargrove moved toward the hatch.

Laura saw a detonator in his hand.

“Do not,” she warned.

Richard smiled.

“Your father designed this platform to survive hurricanes. He did not design it to survive internal demolition.”

Claire moved toward the cells.

Hargrove aimed at her.

The officer fired first.

The bullet struck Hargrove’s shoulder.

His gun fell.

But the detonator remained in his other hand.

He pressed the button.

Nothing happened.

Hargrove stared at it.

Claire held up a severed wire near the wall.

“I disconnected the trigger while you were talking.”

Richard hurled the fuel canister toward a burning emergency lamp.

Laura kicked it aside.

Flames spread across a small section of floor.

Smoke rose.

The officer restrained Hargrove.

Richard ran toward the stairwell.

Laura chased him.

He slammed the steel door behind him.

She caught it before it locked.

They fought on the stairs.

Richard swung a wrench.

Laura blocked with her forearm.

Pain shot through her.

He struck again.

She ducked.

The wrench hit the railing.

Below them, black water moved through cracks in the platform walls.

“You destroyed my family!” Richard shouted.

“You did that yourself.”

“I built everything.”

“On stolen work and broken people.”

He grabbed her throat.

Laura drove him against the wall.

He lost his balance.

For one moment, he hung over the railing.

Laura caught his wrist.

Richard stared up at her.

Below him, machinery churned near the water.

“Pull me up.”

Laura held him.

Her father’s note burned in her mind.

Strength without mercy becomes the thing we fought.

Richard smiled suddenly.

Then he pulled a knife from his belt.

He stabbed toward her hand.

Laura released him.

Richard fell.

He struck a lower platform and rolled toward the water.

He caught a cable.

Still alive.

Still clinging.

Laura descended carefully.

Richard looked up at her.

“Help me.”

Sirens sounded above.

Commander Shaw’s team had arrived.

Laura could leave him for them.

But the cable was tearing.

Richard saw the hesitation.

“Your father begged too.”

Laura’s face went still.

“He begged me not to hurt you.”

The words pierced deeper than the knife could have.

Richard smiled.

Then the cable snapped.

Laura grabbed him again.

Not for him.

For herself.

For her father.

For the woman she chose to remain.

Commander Shaw’s officers reached the lower platform and pulled Richard to safety.

They restrained him.

Richard looked at Laura in disbelief.

“Why?”

She stood above him.

“Because you do not get to turn me into you.”

Behind them, Claire opened Sofia’s cell.

The survivor collapsed into her arms.

The floor hatch was unlocked.

Commander Shaw’s team lifted it.

A cold chamber appeared below.

Inside were personal belongings.

Passports.

Wedding rings.

Shoes.

And human remains.

Richard Prescott’s secrets had finally reached daylight.

But as officers searched the chamber, Claire found a recent shipping log.

One transfer had occurred three days earlier.

Destination: Savannah.

Recipient: M. Bennett.

Laura stared at her mother’s initial.

May you like

Richard began laughing from the floor.

“You still think your mother was only a victim?”
